Hi everyone--I found this board late last night waiting for my husband to get home to begin his weekend off....can't imagine why a support network was on my mind. My hubby is PGY6 in a gyn onc fellowship. This is undoubtly his hardest year yet- and his program is filled with "personalities" that I'm sure could be seen as quirky or interesting if they weren't in charge of every minute of your life/ounce of your sanity. Anyway, I am a former professional SAHM (for 6 years now) with 2 kids -just turned 6 and 3 years old. In general, I manage pretty well because I have adopted a day to day, enjoy the little things in life attitude-----but sometimes that slips away and I think "Hey, who am I kidding????". I was hoping to find support here from keeping me from sliding off into that negativity, because with things the way they are this year I think it would be very hard to get myself out of it!!! So glad to find a support network online-maybe even one I can keep around when we move (again) in 2 years. Can't wait to explore the site!

    Welcome, Angie!

I am Sally, SAHM to 3 boys, aged 7,4, and almost 11 months. My husband is an OB/GYN who has been out of residency for one year and has no desire to do a fellowship, thank God. We have a good friend who just started his second year of a gyn onc fellowship at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis. Oh, we are also in the Air Force and live in north Texas. I am anxious to get to know you better!

      Welcome Angie!

I can't even imagine what being GY6 must be like. (although there are plenty of people here who can!)My husband is in his last year of peds residency and is figuring out what he wants to do when he grows up. We're here in San Antonio and he's in the Army.

Welcome to the group and you will find that we are entirely transferable!

        Angie,

Welcome to the group. My husband graduated from fellowship last year and we've been celebrating the end of training ever since. Wow...PGY-6...of gyn-onc! I'm sure that you have a lot of interesting stories to tell!!

What did you do professionally outside of the home before you switched gears to be the professional inside of the home? I'm also currently a sahm to 3 little devils (errr...angels) though I did recently finish my master's degree. I don't plan on working until all of my children are in school though, and then I am looking for a job with flexibility..ie...I want to be home to meet the bus...so we'll see what happens.

Welcome to the group..the people here have seen me through the tough times and have celebrated my successes with me...I look forward to getting to know you.

            Angie,

Welcome to the boards! I take it that if you are PGY6 that the end is near? Hopefully life will become a little more agreeable after the fellowship is complete. Nonetheless, you must be a very patient woman!

I look forward to meeting you below.

Hi Angie- Welcome to this great place of support. My husband just started PGY6, his third and final year of a neonatology fellowship and I am currently a SAHM to our 10 month old. We can't wait for the training to be over.

We have friends in our area who are thinking of a ob/gyn onc fellowship after completion of residency in two years.

I am glad you found this place and I am looking forward to learning more about you.

Wow --thanks everyone for the warm welcome. My hubby and I just spent a weekend off together and I haven't gotten a chance to check back since posting Friday night. Prior to SAHM hood, I got my PhD in neurosci and did research. It was fantastic and I miss it, but I can't be parted from my babes and I'm lousy at "balancing" work and family. (So is my spouse I guess or he wouldn't have signed on for fellowship hehehe...) We will be done with training in2 years. Can't wait. My husband teases me that then he's going to law school. Funny, huh? He was an architect when I married him, so we have gone through lots of changes together and seem to be doing ok despite our lack of time as a family these days. Thanks for the greeting - I look forward to joining in to many of your discussions!

Angie, that's neat. I did my MS in Mol bio and took a neuropharmacology course that I absolutely loved! One of our other members, Kaaren, also has her PhD in neuroscience and is currently a sahm.

Are you doing any writing or anything? I know that UPI is looking for science writers...

I look forward to getting to know you better!

I'd love to hear about flexible job opportunities. I'm actually a pretty decent science writer and have thought about trying that line of work. Unfortunately, right now my creative talents have mostly been applied to my husband's research papers and bedtime stories.....Do you write?

I'll dig up the web address to apply. I actually applied through UPI months ago and had only heard back that I'd made it through the initial round. I gave up and then out of the blue last week, I got an email asking me to be patient because they have a lot of applicants. Apparently, they are fillling the writing slots first by geographic location...and I don't live in a very big area. So, I'm not out of the game yet, but I haven't even had the opportunity to submit any writing samples.

It is a legitimate writing opportunity though. I've had the opportunity to write for other things, but not regularly and not really as a 'professional'. Let me dig up the address and post it this afternoon!

Regarding writing for our hubbies...I wonder how many of us have done this??? I think we should all be listed as co-authors!

Yes I agree about the co-author thing. My husband's advisors during his research year actually knew my work and they are EXPECTING me to write the paper--my husband (now entrenched in the clinical years) forwarded me an e-mail from the lab head asking him to "have your wife send the paper along to us when she's done with it". They are acknowledging me at least - and as the ghost writer I think I'll make it a glowing acknowledgement Still something about it rubs me the wrong way....I've got to talk to you about the whole SAHM thing sometime on the SAHM board because my situation here is really bizarrre.....

Well, Angie, I'm all ears! And I do hope that you get a glowing acknowldegement!

I'm still searching for the weblink....I have been through my entire list of saved 'favorites' and I can't find it advertised..maybe the advertising is done? I'll keep looking...

Don't worry about it! If you find it-great, but don't go to any trouble. It was nice of you to mention the listing. I checked out their web site and didn't find anything, but I'm not in desperate need of employment. I just enjoy writing and the idea of doing it for a living is tantalizing. I hope it works out for you--let me know if they contact you again!

I have the email address that I can send you...I think writing is an interesting way of staying on top of things and keeping our toes in while we're at home? There are a couple of websites that regularly list writing jobs (for free). I'll post them for you when I dig them up.....you never know what fun thing might come along...

I meant to ask you though...what were you doing before you decided to stay at home ? ie research or teaching?
