Side comment here, but....how the heck do you guys know so much about the "pledge of allegiance". With my mommy brain, I'm lucky if I actually remember the entire pledge itself....but to know about its inception, when it was changed and to be able to carry on an intellecutal discussion about it....it's just so beyond where my brain will take me anymore

OK, kind of on the topic...but really a ridiculous, off-topic hijack:

To all of you who weren't completely convinced that I am an idiot based on my "mis-hearing" of "RuPaul" for "Ron Paul" and the related bewilderment (see "Ron Paul" thread in Debates Discussion), I thought I'd share...

When I was in kindergarten and first learning the Pledge, I was SO confused about where the witch was and what she had to do with the flag and why she was standing on the flag...

The Pledge's phrase "for which it stands"...I heard "for WITCH it stands."

But then, I also got confused at that age by the ZipLock bag commercials. They used to have this TV add with a jingle about when you put your sandwich in the bag, it won't fall out...and they'd have this little kid turn the zipped bag upside down and shake it to demonstrate. I thought they meant that the zipped-in food PERMANENTLY wouldn't come out (my mom clearly did not buy zippy bags). I thought, "Why would you want to waste your lunch?"

So, all in all, I was not one of the "gifted" kids...

Kris, that was my thought too. I don't know that much about it and probably couldn't correctly receit it either. I actually don't really care about it either.

The pledge is a historic document...it is a party of our history. It's just silly when we go back in time now and change buildings, books, money and the pledge etc because we find them offensive today.

Interesting that you voice this position. There is a long line of cases from the US Supreme Court establishing that the cermonial use of the term God (e.g., "In God We Trust" on money, inscribed on courthouse rotundas, etc.) does not violate the Establishment Clause in the First Amendment of the US Constitution (the clause from which the noncodified phrase "the separation of church and state" comes).

But then, I once made the someone from the Clerk's Office here at the courthouse come down to the storage room and PROPERLY FOLD AND STORE a bunch of American flags that I'd found...that had been flung into an old trash can and dumped into a corner in the storage room...discarded and forgotten!!!



WE WORK IN THE FEDERAL COURTHOUSE, FOR CRYING OUT LOUD!! OUR JOBS EXIST AS PART OF THE SYSTEM THAT PROTECTS OUR CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS AND ENSURES DUE PROCESS!!

The flags in the trash can would bother me too. By not caring about the pledge I meant it really doesn't bother me if I mess up the words. Then again I can't even remember when I would have been somewhere that I would need to recite it, it has been a very long time.

The Anthem:

We stand, if husband is in uniform, he stands at attention facing the flag (if there is one)

If not in uniform, but on base, he still stands at attention, flip-flops and all.

If we're at a baseball game, he'll stand with his hand on his heart and I'll stand and place my hand on my heart. There is some (heated) debate in the Veterans community as to whether they should salute or not salute the flag- most say unless they are wearing something that identifies them as vets, they usually do the hand of heart.

I really wish people would take their hats off, too.

Actually, it was even HIS idea to get a computer. I vehemently opposed it back then, accusing HIM of then using the only free moments that we had to play online. Little did we both know that it would be me who would be gobblig up the internet. :>
