I remember learning in Intro Child Psych in undergrad that animal cruelty seen in prepubescents is one of the more accurate predictors of a sociopathic personality as an adult. But, I would think that would have to be contextual. My DH and his brother used to set hamsters on the ceiling fan in his home and watch them fly off. And both boys grew into compassionate, gentle men.
