    2008 Election

    Ok, I thought we had an official thread for this but I can't find it.

    Anyway there was an interesting article in the NY Times today talking about the differences between Edwards' wealth and Romney's.

    They mention several times that Edwards made his money battling corporate America. There is also a commercial running here (its kind of interesting being so close to Iowa) where he talks about cutting health care costs by going after the insurance companies. Oh and another comment is that he's made his money fighting the rich and powerful.

    Someone please tell me this idiot isn't going to become the candidate? Does he really think people don't realize that he's made his money running doctor's out of business??

    Oh, come on, Suzy! You know we all really have names like Rockefeller and Vanderbilt!!!

    We're married to the enemy - those evil doctors who want to help heal the sick and ease pain and suffering! They all are in cahoots with the devil himself - the pharmaceutical companies (aka drug pushers)!!!!



    BTW Edwards is now one of those rich and powerful people. I wonder how he is going to swing "being there for the little guy" while having taken up to 40% of the winnings for his malpractice lawsuits (ie taking the little guy's money for fighting the big, nasty doctors).

      Any other Iowans gearing up for caucus? We are going to take our cameras, as God willing this will be our only time to caucus instead of voting like normal people.

        I'm SO ready for the TV ads to STOP! I hate being this close to Iowa this time of year.

              The computer ones or actual people?

              My mom and dad get computerized calls all the time. The house rep. race is nasty between the two Republicans so they keep calling and leaving nasty messages about the other- which my mother, as one of 10 (or so it seems) Dems in Queen Anne County, MD, thoroughly enjoys.

                I keep reading online that Iowa and South Carolina are getting anti-LDS (Mormon) cards and phone calls distributed/made in these last couple of weeks. UGH. Now, THAT starts involving ME (and, millions of others) in this whole stupid thing. Just attack a single individual PLEASE - not an entire religious organization.

                I really, really hate the entire party caucus portion of presidential elections....

                  Half or more are the computerized ones. But lots of real folks too. Like the lovely Edwards campaign worker with whom I got to explain that my husband is an Obstetrician, and so no way in farking hell would we be voting for her candidate


                  I have not heard anything negative about LDS, nor gotten anything in the mail :huh:

                  I just had a pretty amazing experience. A really nice local guy going door to door for his candidate and reminding me to caucus. The freaking windchill was -10 That is some serious dedication!

                    I'm glad it's not completely widespread, then.

                    Apparently there were some phone calls in Iowa and fake Christmas cards sent out in South Carolina (that involve election fraud since the anonymous sender had "paid for by the Boston, Massachusetts Temple" printed on them - temples are just buildings and do not have any funds first of all and second of all our church soooo does not endorse candidates or parties). With the card thing the FBI is investigating. There's apparently some new PAC out there now entirely dedicated to "informing" voters of the Mormon attempt at world domination (sounds like the hysterical stuff you hear about Jews taking over the world ).

                        Oh, this has definitely happened a lot in US history with LDS. It's just that this is the latest round of "You're a cult", "You're trying to take over the world - look at all the educated members you have!",etc. I got to hear that LOTS where I grew up. I also get to hear (on the internet, television, and in person) that Romney is "bad" because he's got a beautiful family, he goes to church, he doesn't drink or smoke, he's made a lot of money as a successful businessman, and he is a nice guy. Yup, ALL of those are reasons not to vote for a person. Now, if there were a preponderance of LDS (Mormons) who were criminals or violent or we seemed to be producing monstrous/crazy individuals then I think I'd be strongly examining my own beliefs along with the rest of the world! But, it seems like the "problem" some have with LDS (Mormons) is that they're such gosh-darn nice, straight-shooters. I hear SO many negative comments about that to my face.... I mean a criticism of Romney in Boston Magazine was that he has no sacred cows!!! Umm....That's a good thing.

                        My ideal situation would be a Romney/McCain ticket. I really like McCain - as a vice-president. Romney would be the brains of the operation and McCain could be the brawn.

                        I think I strongly dislike Huckabee injecting religion into politics on purpose. I feel embarrassed when I hear tv reporters state that "homeschoolers" support Huckabee. Ummmm...not me or any other homeschooler I know. I also have a petty problem with the man's name. President Huckster is what pops into my mind when I hear his name.

                        Ron Paul? Intriguing ideas - but naive. He's idealistic but not realistic. I agree with what I've heard him say on just about everything - but on an intellectual level. However, some of his supporters scare me and that gives me pause. If these are the people supporting him then what does that say about his message?

                        I don't know what to think about the Democratic side of things. I thought Hillary Clinton was a shoe-in. Apparently not! I know that Edwards is OUT - far beyond anything I would ever vote for. I mean, he's got commercials on saying that if Congress doesn't choose to vote for socialized healthcare he'll institute it anyway. Ummmm...OK, maybe I don't want a dictator for president. Barack Obama seems so...naive and inexperienced (see Ron Paul above). Although Clinton is running on her "record" as First Lady she's definitely more qualified to run the White House than the other two.

                        What's amazing to me is that this is still such a horserace within the parties themselves. There's three front-runners on both sides (well, and the harsh, unelectable Guiliani in there somewhere) and it's a statistical deadheat in so many places. Wild.

                          Oh, I have to admit his name "Mitt" bothers me as well. The first time I heard it years ago I thought, "Who would call their child after a piece of sports equipment?!?"

                          His real name is Willard. He's called Mitt after his father's best friend who was named Milton. I think they opted to call him Willard Mitt because Willard Milton was actually a worse moniker.

                            NBC is declaring Huckabee & Obama the winners in IA with Clinton & Edwards in a tight race for 2nd.

                              Huckabee and Obama....I watched it go down on CNN....what a joke.

                              I can't believe McCain didn't do better....and Clinton losing to Edwards too? Unbelievable....If Clinton was a man, with the same ideals,she would have won.
