I hate when they call it early. I'll read the 'real' results in the paper tomorrow.

      Re: 2008 Election

Between Huckabee and Obama I think this would be the first time I would seriously consider voting for a third party candidate (which WILL be Ron Paul, btw). I was shocked by Clinton's third place status. Shocked.

I'm not as worried about Huckabee. The poll numbers showed he really won because the Pat Robertson-types got their overwhelmingly white, rural state to come in for a man who is specifically appealing to evangelical Protestants. I don't know that we'll see a repeat of his win in many other states (a few, granted, but not enough to get the nomination). It's really a horse-race between McCain and Romney at this point.

I could do McCain, but not Huckabee. When will the Republican party learn that it is driving away its moderate base?

Assuming that by "do" you meant "vote for," I'm almost with you. I like McCain MUCH MUCH MUCH more than I like Huckabee (or, for that matter, Wanna-Be Romney--"I wannabe a conservative...may be my Ken Doll-like hair will establish me as the Next Ronald Reagan"). I don't understand Huckabee's appeal at all. He's a "conservative" because he's a Baptist from Arkansas? Please. So was Bill Clinton. I don't see anything in his gubernatorial record, other than being consistently pro-life, that would suggest he's a true conservative.

But, in the end, I dislike everyone the Dems offer more than I dislike Huckabee, so I am sure I would end up voting for him if he's the candidate. Whoopee.

Which he won't be the candidate. He'll play well in IO and SC, but where's the base that will give him much traction in NY, FLA, CA, NJ, etc.?

In terms of McCain's performance yesterday, I thought it was better than expected. Just a month ago, he was declared dead by most of the pundits and was registering in the "barely there" digits in IO. Plus, he got killed in IO during the 2004 Caucus because of his position on farm subsidies.

I think Romney hurt himself at the end with some negative ads that were a turn off for Iowans. It was about Huckabee being soft on crime. Well, crime just isn't a big problem in Iowa  It just made him seem like a bully. Romney did win our county though, which does not surprise me as we are more urban and the University community has a large LDS population.

OK, what was up with Huckabee and Chuck Norris?

Will he get WWF endorsements next?

Are the ninjas going to come out in favor of one of the candidates, too?

Umm....McCain and Romney are about equal in their "conservative-ness" (is that even a word?). In other words they're both moderates. If you really, really wanted to vote for a "true" conservative then Ron Paul would be your guy. He IS a strict (very strict) Constitutionalist, after all.

Agreed. I dislike Huckabee and Romney pretty much equally. Both impress me as phony conservatives.

While I like some of Paul's Imaginary Judiciary thesis, he deviates from traditional strict constructionism in some ways. I am not a libertarian. Plus, he's a nut when it comes to foreign policy. Being conservative is not being isolationist. The Constitution and its democratic principles are worth sharing and acting in our own self-defense is clearly contemplated by the Constitution.

Plus, he's shrill, overbearing, nasal, self-righteous, and impractical. He has a lot in common, stylistically, with Howard Dean. Maybe it's something that comes from being a doctor.

My ideal situation would be a Romney/McCain ticket. I really like McCain - as a vice-president. Romney would be the brains of the operation and McCain could be the brawn.
McCain absolutely cannot stand Romney. They do not get along.

Yeah, I just heard that this last week (that McCain doesn't like Romney - but apparently he DOES like Huckabee).

Too bad. I like them both - just for different positions.
