Wacky! These Iowans and their ways.
First we go to our local recreation center. You have to go to you assigned spot, and that one only. First you go in one room and "sign in". Yep- just give your name and sign- no ID needed If you are unregistered, you can do it there.
Next everyone proceeds to the gym. There are signs for each candidate with a few chairs and bleachers underneath.
Now the busywork starts. At 7PM the doors are closed and they elect precinct President and Secretary. The, a count of the entire room is needed. We are told to bunch ourselves into groups of 20, regardless of preferred candidate.
Once we have that number, the initial alignment begins. We will try lines this time to get an initial count.
Each candidate had to have 63 people to meet the 15% threshold. Obama, Clinton, and Edwards all had that. Each group can now give a one minute speech before the raiding begins.
Folks from each camp are talking to one another. Richardson's folks are especially frantic- only 4 more people and they would be viable. They beg us over at the Obama camp to give them just enough to be viable. Nobody bites. They threaten they will go Edwards if they don't reach viability. Soon the time is up--- and the Richardson folks go between Obama and Edwards camps. Clinton had been second, but after the unviable candidates combined Edwards was up on her substantially.
414 caucus goers in my precinct. Obama had 208. Edwards 109. Clinton 87. The rest never realigned
