  • McCain's Face

I wish that someone from the McCain camp would address the growing lump on his face, which happens to be on the same side as his melanoma years ago. Maybe it's nothing, maybe it's scar tissue...but it's getting bigger and I think it's relevant. I can't find anything about it on his website. Am I the only one who sees it?

Gosh, I know this just sounds like an awful thing to think, but I think he should look for a young-ish (or at least, younger) VP candidate, if he's the Rep's Presidential candidate. I mean, the Reps should give a LOT of thought to the VP... just in case. Not wishing him ill, of course. It's just--there are days, despite his endless energy, that we are reminded that he's getting up there.

Probably not, if removing it would leave you disfigured.

Seriously, I haven't completely decided who I'm voting for in November (I'm leaning, though ) and McCain's ballooning cheek is concerning to me. Even if it's nothing, I wish he would address it and say so.

I'll ask DH what he thinks. I'm guessing that if he had melanoma, he gets regular skin checks (or at least was advised to).

            Re: McCain's Face

Anna Quindlen wrote an interesting piece in this week's Newsweek about the age factor in the presidential race. I'll be completely honest and say that it's one of my biggest concerns about McCain as a candidate.

Nellie, I just emailed his campaign. I'll post their response if I get one.

My dh once told me what he thinks it is, but I wasn't really paying attention. Too much medical lingo for a German major.

Crazy bad TMJ? Whatever it is, it does make him look jowl-y.

                    Re: McCain's Face

It could just be crazy-bad TMJ.

I have TMJ and one side of my jawline is definitely more "developed" than the other side. In other words: On one side of my jawline it's definitely more square. Not even nearly as bad as what McCain seems to have going on. But, I've also noticed he talks through gritted teeth all of the time. He's either got some psychological issues or serious TMJ. When mine gets particularly bad I talk through gritted teeth as well....

Well, I know he has a lot of physical issues due to his time as a POW in Vietnam. Did you know he can't even brush his own hair anymore b/c of how they beat him?

                        Re: McCain's Face

Ok...this from the saw a photo diagnosis. DH said that his quick guess is the asymmetry (sp? sorry) is due to reconstruction and scar tissue. He would be shocked if McCain wasn't followed closely and screened for more melanoma. End DH, now me -- I'd be pretty surprised if he did not have a mohs procedure and someone making sure of clear margins.

ETA: Stella, I think that photos post-Vietnam show him as with a thinner face. I'll let Heidi look for the photos.

Yes, I think you're right, but as you age, these things can affect you differently. ... Right?

 It isn't near as pronounced in the article that Heidi linked. I skimmed but I think it is 2000.

I don't think the lump has grown in recent years. Sometimes the pictures just make it look different.....I've watched a few of his recent speeches etc and I don't notice a big difference to a few years ago.

He is being followed carefully by docs....I'm sure there is no recurrencet here to be worried about. My guess is that he is more on top of this health issue than his supporters.
