  • President Carter and Hamas

Anyone catching this? I heard President Carter this week on the Diane Rehm show talking about his visit in detail. He said Rice was misinformed that the US did not advise against talking to Hamas. He was only adviced to not got to Gaza as it was dangerous. He said in the interview, that they took the advice and decided not to go there.

THEN... on CNN last night I heard him talking to Blitzer (?sp - of bearded guy on CNN) that he ran out of time to go to Gaza. When Blitzer said, you didn't go to Gaza because it was dangerous, he then stated no he did not think it was dangerous in the least and they ran out of time to go.

This is one of the many um, quoted things he has said that don't add up. Including that he was not adviced to NOT talk to Hamas - um don't believe that for one bit. AND he said he reached an agreement with Hamas to get a cease fire for Gaza even though previously Hamas would only agree to one on Gaza and the West Bank. Carter said Isreal wouldn't take the deal. Hamas - denies the deal.

I'm sure there are some things that are just stacked up against Carter, but he seems a little to much like he is pushing his agenda than to make just peace.

    Tacit agreement

However, an official close to Ehud Barak, Israel's defence minister, suggested that the two sides could still decide to hold their fire without a formal accord being agreed.

"We don't rule out a tacit agreement, on condition it is done in stages. In a first stage we demand all groups stop firing rockets. Israel would then be willing to reduce its operations if the calm continues," he told the AFP news agency.

Mahmoud Abbas, the Palestinian president, has voiced cautious support for the truce initiative.

"We hope that this proposal is a serious one, and we hope it will be taken seriously by Israel," Nimer Hammad, an aide to Abbas, said.

Interesting. This is from Aljazerra, and I never heard Carter say there was still a truce put together. Another reason I don't exactly trust what Carter has to say in regards to the Middle East.
