based on what? she delivered a very sarcastic, condescending speech that she probably didn't write. She did deliver it very well, but she didn't prove that she is knowledgeable on matters of the nation or the globe.

And as far as people being sexist about her - her own party is doing it! I saw a button that said "Hottest VP", and a couple others along those lines. Who does that help?

I thought she gave a good speech. It will be very interesting to say the least. They will both be able to throw some punches in a debate.

Because she has poise, style, wit, authenticity, and appeal. Plus, she actually says something and she has the common touch. She was WAY better than what I thought she would be. All these people that claimed that she was a third-stringer and didn't have the chops really misjudged her.

And she was certainly entitled to be sarcastic at times. The left deserved it, in response to their response to her nomination.

          Biden better get ready.

On the whole "Hottest VP" thing--it's a joke. It's not meant to be derisive--as versus the comments about her ability to mother. I think it's funny. She is really pretty--but that's not why the conservatives like her.

I am incredibly far left.... but she gave an incredible speech and I am relieved. I hope that her and Biden take the gloves off. I think that she made the right emotional choices, I think that she looked resolved and capable. Whether she is or not remains to be seen. Well done. I am looking forward to an interesting political season.

All of this analysis, though, also may be a bit overdone (probably a product of hyperinterest in her, given her dark horse status). I think that Wolf Blitzer (CNN) tonight had it right--at the end of the day, you vote for the top of the ticket...McCain now has a bit of a problem--he's got to be at least as good as she was or all her momentum won't do a whole lot for him!

BUT .... what about the sexism from her own party????? If dems were out there calling her a hottie, I know a few of our own who would need to be scraped down from the ceiling!

                  Re: Palin's Speech

I took the "community organizer but with actual responsibilities" joke personally. Just sub in "kind of like a *PTO president* but with actual responsibilities" and put it in a Democratic speech. Sexist as hell and demeaning as well. I think communtiy organization is valuable thankless work. By all means, let's extinguish the "thousand points of light" and get everyone out on a payroll somewhere. That's what the USA is all about. Making money, right? Obviously, she touched a nerve with me. I'm a fan of helping others instead of going for the traditional job. We need more community organizers and less Wall Street bankers asking the government for another bail out.

You'd think someone preaching respect for the little people (small towns, moms, etc) would offer a little of it herself. Obviously, I'm not a fan for other reasons, but I found elements of her speech and the laughter that followed personally demeaning. Gawd, I wish I was a good ole' ALaskan hockey mom so my opinions mattered! As it is, I'm just a poor little small town Ohio soccer mom these days....oh wait....I am supposed to matter. I guess I should send them an email. Do they do that? Us moms just love to make sarcastic cracks about the other side.

It's small town values vs. big city folk all over again. Welcome to the culture wars. How is this "change" from politics as usual? I've been hearing this battle for the last two elections. I don't CARE who's better. Can we stop putting each other down and get something done?

Harry Reid calls her "shrill". His sexism is disgusting.

That is SO funny that he fired back calling her "shrill." I just won a bet--I wagered that it would take less than a hour for someone from the Dem camp to call her either "shrill" or a "shrew"--both words never applied to men but used to imply that a woman is a nagging, loud annoyance.

Personally, I didn't think the point she made with the dig at Reid was all that helpful--Reid isn't a figure universally disliked by all Reps, and certainly not by all conservatives--he is admired by many for his pro-life position. It's just that he and McCain HATE each other. Kind of personal...

                        Re: Palin's Speech

I felt that the republican speakers, in general, were mean both Palin and Guiliani. I felt that their speeches were meant to garner laughs more than anything.

On the contrary, I felt that in Obamas speech he was tough, but not mean, and he has been defending Palin to the media and has never waivered from his speech of McCain as a patriot and war hero.

When people say "the left" has been attacking Palin, they are referring to media who in no way represent the Obama campaign, whereas, here we have the actual speakers and Vice Presidential nominee saying ridiculous things.

                          Re: Palin's Speech

The sarcastic, nasty tone really activated my "Mom" genes. Every line I read makes me want to yell -- "Knock it off or I'm sending you to your room!" I read this morning that the tone of the speech did not play well with white married women -- I wonder if many had that same feeling. The same article said that white married women thought she did an excellent job...just drop the tone. I'm not sure what that means. I do think she has "charisma" a la Obama when she speaks. McCain needs that. I can't believe that this election is turning out to be a base war after all. I do still give Obama cred for not taking the bait and staying out of the fray. I'm not sure that will last, but so far he has been on issue and not identity/culture war politics except for the one "bitter" comment they recorded way back.

                            Re: Palin's Speech

What everyone is forgetting in both this and the other speech debate threads is that while these speeches are televised across the country, a large portion of those people are NOT the target market. It was the same way last week during the DNC. The conventions are meant to fire up the base so that they will all work hard for their candidates for the next 8 weeks. The pitbull comment was a joke toward the people in the crowd holding the hockey mom signs. The differences that Palin and Guiliani pointed out in their speeches were done to do just that, point out the differences. When Palin criticized Obama being a community organizer she was responding to the fact that all week people have been criticizing her for being the mayor of a town of 6,000 and a member of the PTA.

McCain's speech tonight will probably be more of the same, he'll be pointing out differences just like Obama did a week ago. No on will give any details, just like Obama didn't. People are saying Palin didn't hit all of the issues, of course not she would have been up there all night. As it was they had to extend the coverage by 15 minutes and cut out the biography video of her. The debates are for the details, the next two months will be very interesting and ground breaking for this country. This week, just like last week is all show.

I watched most of her speech, but had to turn her off, because IMO she is a real turn-off.

I was waiting for something other than sarcasm to come out of her mouth, and didn't get it. I realize that I'm not in her target audience, but I felt she was over the top and....yes.... shrill. (I've watched tapes of myself teaching, and unfortunately, I'm high-pitched and shrill too. )
