Ah, that's clearer. I do agree that a good education, safe activities, and better jobs would help prevent people from becoming criminals who use guns for criminal activity. I just don't know that the ones who are already criminals would be willing to turn in their guns for other compensation, unless they knew where to get more guns. I know it is idealistic, but I think that if we could figure out a way to address the root causes, the illegal drug/gun market would dry up on its own and legitimate gun owners would be able to keep their guns.

Well, unfortunately, criminals don't obey the law. So, you can't get them to willingly turn over their weapons (of any sort) unless they renounce their criminal behavior and inclinations.

The only way to destroy violence is by instilling in people a sense of right and wrong and the integrity to choose the right. As we've seen with England, if you take away gun ownership that leaves only the criminals with guns. And, if those guns become more scarce for even the criminals these criminals will turn to other weaponry with which to inflict violence on their victims (witness the mulling over of banning even knives on that island).

It would be a truly wonderful thing to take away the incentive for anyone on earth to intentionally harm another (whether it was by criminal activity towards a victim or a victim defending him/herself against a criminal). That's a type of idealism that I can agree with.
