  • Playdates/Sleepovers and Guns

Interesting conversations! Now the consensus seems to be some kind of further safety measures on gun ownership.

The question: Do you or would ask the parents of a child whom was a friend of your child if they had guns in the house, and where they were located?

DS had a playdate at our house years ago and the mom was married to a physician and nicely asked me the above question. She was totally uncomfortable to ask, but she said her and her husband have decided to make this a must know for all playdates (she left her son at our place for the playdate). Honestly, I haven't had to ask because it hasn't come up for him to play at someone's house w/out me. But I would, if I remembered to.

    Would/Do you?

I wouldn't have a problem with anyone asking. Hell, I'd ask. But I have no problem leaving my kids in a house with guns so long as they're properly locked away, inaccessible, and the kids will be adequately supervised.

We have a disassembled antique shotgun in our house, no shells or whatever you use any where in the house. You all have been fairly warned in case you visit. I have let my daughter play at a house where I knew there was an unloaded locked up hunting rifle (also no ammo in the house).

We have unloaded hunting rifles in a double-locked gun safe, behind two locked doors, and no ammo in the house. I have no issues with guns. Only with those who don't exercise adequate precautions or provide enough supervision to the children under their care. But the supervision thing is one of my hot-buttons regardless of whether guns are involved or not.

My children do not 'do' sleepovers.

DH and I have had too much experience among our extended family members of sleepovers providing cover for parents who were closet child molesters.

So, barring an unforseen emergency situation there is really no reason to have sleep overs among children. Our kids play with their friends outside almost every day, anyway.
