  • Close the deal?

Not sure if this belongs in Debates, but since it involves politics, I stuck it here.

Question: To any undecideds, or merely soft Obama supporters--did you watch Obama's infomercial last night and, if so, did it help you make a decision (either way)? Also, if you formerly supported McCain but now plan to vote for Obama as a result of the infomercial, what about its content persuaded you? Or, I guess, if you had planned to vote for Obama but now will not because of the program, why?

I am interested in knowing its impact. If it's super-effective, it seems like this will become standard fare in future elections, since you can reach so many people.

It's funny, actually. I've really enjoyed the internet aspect of the Obama campaign. We are an internet only household (no TV/cable). As a result, we couldn't see the infomercial. It didn't stream anywhere and wasn't up on the Obama site last night. I suppose I can see it now on youtube or posted somewhere. I hadn't realized how having no TV access has left me out of the whole commercial part of this election. I think that's a good thing. All the debates and news interviews have been available via streaming or on podcasts. Ads you have to seek out. Who wants to do that?

I didn't think it was a great idea. I would have liked to see how it played. I heard reviews that it didn't change minds - but didn't hurt either. We'll see. Good thread idea.

My friend posted the Youtube link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GtREqAmLsoA and transcript: http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/washing ... ama-1.html but I haven't had a chance to watch it yet.

On one hand, I was surprised at how safe it played it. I guess I was expecting more details--I'm not sure why. I think I miscalculated his purpose. As several commentators have noted (not necessarily being critical), there was nothing new or particularly specific in it. It seems like he used the time as an opportunity to shore up vascillating voters leaning toward him but needing to "see" him as President (hence, the backdrop around the desk, etc.), as versus as an opportunity to win votes based on more hard-core policy discussions.

Can't say I blame him--he's leading, so why risk controversy or questions by injecting a lot of details, etc.? There's no way you could into the down-and-dirty details of any plans for change without ticking off some group. Can't make everyone happy all the time...Just play it safe and have the voters' "last image of him" before going into the ballot box to simply be of a positive overall tone.
