  • I just wanted to know where the Town Hall Meeting was

I don't know if this is proper to place in "Debates"--but it is political in nature, so I thought I'd play it safe. I am not really fishing for a debate on the health care bill. I guess, more than anything, I am just sharing a disturbing story I personally experienced when I tried to get minimal information from my Congressman. I just called anonymously, to politely request where the blasted town hall was!
    __________________________________________________ _

    What the heck??!

So, I was told by a friend of mine who is involved with local politics that my Congressman was planning a town hall for last night, to discuss health care. I was excited--good! I really wanted to go and hear what on earth was going on, when the final bill would be expected, what (if anything) was accomplished with bipartisan meeting of the six yesterday, etc.

I called his office early yesterday morning, to ask when and where the town hall would be.

I was lied to! I can't believe it! The young lady with whom I spoke said firmly: "We are not having a town hall until the end of August, and it will be only by telephone." She denied that the Congressman was hosting one...that day! I thanked her and hung up, thinking that my friend must have just been wrong. So I let it go.

Nope. He was right. My Congressman most definitely had a town hall last night. His office lied to me! ?? I repeat: what the heck??

I am really mad. There is NO WAY that the employees at the Congressman's office didn't know he was having a town hall last night. Yes, I am a Republican and my Congressman is a Democrat (not that the young lady with whom I spoke could have known that). But I wasn't planning to go to heckle him down! First, with my job, I could never do that. Second, I am not a "heckler." I am just a concerned citizen, and I think I am entitled to know when/where public town halls are!

It is bad enough that the White House (run by a former much-touted "community organizer") doesn't like...community voices (if they are in opposition to their agenda). But now, apparently, the game plan is to discourage community participation. What a bunch of freaking hypocrits. I honestly feel as though I am having something stolen from me--my ability to participate in the process by visiting with my elected representative.

What on earth are they so afraid of??? If they are such supporters of the plan, then why are they hiding from concerned citizens? They are OUR elected officials. You are accountable TO US! You don't like people to be frustrated and express anger? Then be competent and not simply partisan. Offer explanations--don't demand compliance or threaten to call us "angry" or "racist." If you don't want people mad at you, LISTEN instead of lecturing. But don't simply avoid us. We elected you!!

I realize that the WH is now instructing Senators and Congressmen to "hit back twice as hard" whenever they catch criticism at a town hall, and that the Dem machine is treating any dissenters as loud-mouthed foaming whack jobs. I realize that the WH is now asking that we "turn in" to them people and groups disseminating negative information about the House's reform plan (thanks, Linda Douglas, for that super-creepy video request). But they need to distinguish between their rhetoric and the reality. Most people aren't crazy; they are concerned. Avoiding the public is going to make you look positively...undemocratic. This isn't Chicago politics.

And, for the record, I would be EQUALLY miffed if a Republican pulled this crap!!

I'd call the Congressman's office again and ask why you were given incorrect information or write to him directly. That's just bizarre. I'd be more inclined to assume that the staffer was incompetent than that it was the product of some nefarious White House plot, but either way I think your Congressman would be interested to know about your perceptions.

Oh, I doubt it's part of a WH plot. That would give everyone a little too much credit. I do think, however, it is an symptomatic of how the Dems--from the WH and the Hill--are handling the public's frustrations--trying to ignore it, recharacterize it, or avoid it. Or, it worst comes to worst, name-calling and "hitting back" (maybe causing people to think twice before speaking up and landing on the news, and possibly be treated like Joe the Plumber).

No, he's not the least bit interested in what my concerns are. This is a strongly Democratic area. He doesn't have to care. After I started this thread, I turned on the TV news--the local news carried a lot more coverage than foxnews.com or cnn.com. His town hall meeting made the news this morning (along with several others). He was upset that people had the audacity to criticize the non-final bill. People who aren't on board with this are "troublemakers."

Boy, are the Dems screwing up on this one--misreading this. Fascinating, from the party that posits itself as the one "of the people." The outrage is not manufactured. This is not contrived. This is not part of a grand, right-wing conspiracy. This is real frustration that bespeaks genuine disapproval.

I will try to go to Sen. Claire McCaskill's town hall next Tuesday morning. Even McCaskill, who is practically sewn to Obama's hip, is putting together the math here (she is a Sen. of a swing state that went McCain, after all). She made a comment today about how the Dems are making a mistake by calling the town hall meeting voices contrived.

      Tuesday will be interesting.

Your post would be (and should be) sent to your local newspaper and TV news. That is total BS they lied to you! It's too bad you didn't get catch them in a lie via email. No matter what your option, you should absolutely have a right to attend a public forum.

ITA - That is completely inappropriate, considering the underlying purpose of a town hall!!

I'm right there with you...grrr...and you should send a letter to the editor.

Are you sure it was a public event? I'm wondering if maybe it was invite-only, or just for the residents of some particular senior center or something. Wouldn't be much of a town hall, but certainly not impossible.

The weird thing about all of this publicity around townhall meetings on the healthcare subject: It's only in the news because White House and Democratic groups are labeling questioners and dissenters as part of some enormous conservative "conspiracy". Very, very weird.

There was just a commenter on the Dianne Rhem show this morning about this very issue- but in reverse- the person was from Indiana and lived in a very conservative area and when she contacted her (R) Representative, she was also told that there weren't going to be any Town Halls and his office was wierdly evasive about the issue as a whole.

I don't understand why any of them would be reluctant to meet with the very people who have elected them. We are their bosses after all.

No kidding, the Republicans can't even run a good candidate or figure out their message. The idea that they could put together a weekend luncheon let alone a conspiracy cracks me up.

A lot of it IS being pushed by advocacy groups though. I don't think that's terribly surprising, and left-wing advocacy groups have done similar things for years. (Code Pink, anyone?)

I think it's worth remembering that advocacy groups are made up of people who care about an issue. The fact that they are part of a group does not make their view illegitimate.

My problem is my job. I work for a federal judge. There is no way I can risk--even by attenuated association--dragging my judge's name into this. I have to live a politically very low-profile life.

Yeah, I thought of that, but on the news they characterized it as a public event open to everyone in his district. Apparently, his staff was pretty upset and unprepared--they usually get 10 or 12 people for these things.

Maybe it was best I missed it. It seemed to have devolved into a shouting match with a lot of people leaving feeling that they hadn't been heard--on both sides.

Your post inspired me to call my state representatives and senators to see if/when they were doing a town hall meeting.

I made half a dozen phone calls and was transferred all over the place. I only found out that I could talk to Senator Al Franken at the Minnesota State Fair or watch the local media for announcement regarding Senator Amy Klobuchar's schedule.

It makes me laugh thinking I could talk with Senator Franken about health care reform over deep fried Snickers on a stick.
