  • Interesting Article

I found this on MSN this morning. It's definitely relevant to this group.

That is really interesting. I'm glad they pointed out the diffrences in cost, residency pay, and length of training for doctors here. Since Sicko, everyone just seems to have the idea that U.S. doctors are way overpaid, without realizing why there is a difference.

I'm really surprised, too, that doctors' salaries are only 10% of the total health care costs. Wow...

I'm not surprised that they're only 10% of the costs - if you look at how much overhead is at hospitals (multiple nurses, CRNA's, PA's, NP's, million dollar machines, secretaries, etc.) doctors really are just a drop in the bucket.

I'm glad to see they talked about the cost of education and the debt, I truly believe if they cut salaries to much some students will choose cheaper schools, which is fine, and shorter residencies which will shift the issue to not enough specialists, the opposite of what it is now.

The article seems to be based on outdated facts. In the UK, medical school now costs money and has done so for a few years. It is still nothing compared to what it costs in the U.S. (£3000 per year or so at most, IIRC), however stating that it's free is definitely incorrect.

I definitely think that these figures should be put out there more. People really have no clue as to how much it costs.

He left out Malpractice insurance costs.

ITA and it pisses me off to see the media giving out false figures for income. How about the ungodly hours residency requires? Buy in costs weren't mentioned either.

What wasn't noted - was the amount of interest the average dr has to pay too.

whoa @ the differences between pay,

i am however biased on if doctors get paid too much, when i have to PAY them i think it costs too much, but when my wife brings home the 'bacon' it can never be too much...
