  • Twilight books - worthy of adult reading?

So you are a grow adult, have responsibilities, pull up the big kid britches - do you dare go to the tween section of the book store to buy these books and *GASP* read them?

    And are they "true" literature.

Not sure personally, as I'm not into vampires (sorry Lily) and couldn't muster the idea of buying a book out of the kid section that has the cover of a movie poster on it...

Can a grow adult read these and keep their integrity? Yes or No?

No. But I read all 4.5 in less than a week.

I sure hope so, b/c I've read all of them (multiple times). They're just good. I held out for a LONG time (same fears as you), and then read the whole series in 8 days.

You read Harry Potter, didn't you?

Well, I um, ordered them from Amazon...

I don't think they'll ever qualify as "literature", but I have to say that Meyer is better than most authors at getting you to connect with her characters. There are very few books I've read where the characters felt so "real" while I was reading, so while she does have room for improvement as a writer, that is a rare talent that earns my respect.

If I were to read only for enlightenment and growth, I would get bored with reading really quickly. I like to read classics and "thinking" books for awhile, then mix it up with a little bit of airport fiction. Nothing wrong with that, in my opinion!

ITA. I can seriously feel Bella's pain and see Edward sitting in the corner of my bedroom. It's eerie how real those characters are.

Now granted, after I flew through the entire series in about 2 weeks, I promptly hit up the classic lit section at Books-A-Million and picked up something along the lines of Hemingway or Faulkner or Austen or Dostoevsky.... but regardless, I still couldn't get Edward out of my head for months .

Honestly, I don't see these books as literature by any definition. And Meyer is not a great writer either, but what she does have going for her is that she is an amazing storyteller. I cringed at grammar mistakes, repetitive language, etc; but still got sucked into the stories and felt involved in the characters lives. She tells a great story. *shrug*

Crystal, that's very true re: Meyer.
I have read all books, before the serious hype hit, because a friend asked me to.
I also attended a midnight showing of Twilight (which I will never do again because the tweens were so rabid that I could barely hear the dialogue).

Overall, pretty good storytelling but I felt that the last book was super boring and didn't follow adherence to the model of plot. Ugh sauce.

I took 14 days but the above post is accurate for me too!

Interesting timing for this thread. Yesterday I had to let a repair guy into a neighbors home while he was working, and while I was there picked up Twilight out of curiosity and started reading. Got completely sucked in!! I went straight to the library afterwards to get a copy and was up until 2am reading it!

I was a little embarrassed in the teen section of the library looking for the book!

When DH's grandmother died last year and I knew we would be driving to KS and back in a weekend (20 hours in the car), I borrowed the first two books in the Twilight series and read them on the way to KS. I was completely sucked in and bought the rest of them at Target while we were there to read on the way home.

Not great literature.....but a great way to pass time on a LOOONG drive!

Personally, not my favorite books. I won't read them again, but I did think that they were okay. I think the quality of the books and the plot line got worse throughout the series. The 4th book really bothered me. I am truly amazed by people that compare them to Harry Potter. Blasphemy!

I personally just have zero interest in vampires.

But as someone who read, I think, every Babysitter's Club book ever written, it's hard for me to fault anyone's taste in books.

I read them all. Some while sitting in carline at the Catholic school my kids went to. Some I stayed up all night to read the whole book in less than 24 hours.

I am not drawn in like most others I know. I am not sure why. I like to read. I am trying to start #3. I read New Moon in a week on vacation. They are okay. I like Bella. The vampire stuff is wierd.
