This post came at just the right time for me. I'm in the midst of a series of health crises these days -- and I was beating myself up for not having a regular GP yet. I have been in the dentists office four times in the last two weeks (treated for tooth absess with antibiotics, root canal, crown) and have been to see the gynecologist early because of a gyn issue - on antibiotics AGAIN for a cyst. Last year I developed seasonal allergies that have plagued me. I started taking daily vitamins and Zyrtec...and those seem to have aggravated my sensitive tummy. I'm now on a course of proton pump inhibitors to stop pain from what was probably an ulcer. (DH's diagnosis but so far so good.) With all this - and the fact that both my kids and my dogs have been sick and in to the doctor's office in the last month - I feel like I have been living in waiting rooms. That's probably why I still feel crappy.

I have the been calling around to internists for the last few days. All the recommended ones are not taking new patients. I'm calling someone that a recommended doc suggested. She's youngish and I'm hoping that's good. I've resolved to have an internist appt. each year around my birthday. My annual Gyn checkup (started last year) and mammogram(also started last year) are also in November. I've also made my check up appt for the dentist in advance. I'm hoping that all these doctors will keep me from dialing in pain next time.

I'm so glad I'm not the only smart woman out there that has neglected preventative care for a LONG time. I saw the OB/Gyn when I was preggers of course but I haven't seen a regular doctor for much of anything from the age of 33 - 40. I guess that's not unusual given the responses on this thread!

After having the joy of some extra dental work from not keeping up with visits, DH and I have regular dental visits for the last 5 years or so. Good idea, Angie, to have a visit around a birthday! That gives me 10 months.

Re: Do you go to the doctor?

I've never had a doc. I don't like going because it'd not like I'll hear anything GOOD, and I don't want to pay to hear anything BAD.

My wides forcing me to go to a doc. next wk I'll see how it turns out...

When it rains, it pours!! I read your post and it could have been me, word for word. It sucks!
PPI's work wonders. But I would say to try not to stay on them too long (no more than 8 weeks they say). I've been on them for two years, and am about to wean myself off which will not be fun If your allergies are still acting up, try Astelin. It's a very good antihistimine.

No, I go to a NP who will refer me to a doc if there's any need. I'm due for my gyn visit- one year from the ablation is in December. When I'm there I'll get a referral to the derm for my every so often skin check. I have a yearly mammogram but that's no big deal- the Army has a whole little clinic devoted to nothing but mammograms and it's so fast that it takes maybe 20 minutes from start to finish.

I avoid the dentist which is stupid but I floss, brush and listerine with the best of them so...

I take the dude for his check-ups and to the dentist every six months. I found a great peds dentist who takes the military insurance (he's former military himself). He even uses grape flavored gloves.

My husband. He's an idiot. He got hit by a car and didn't go to the doctor. The only reason he ended up going to get checked out was because the Chief of Peds and his boss (head of child neurology) threatened him.

I pretty much know that he could have a sucking chest wound and he'd just tape some saran wrap on it and go about his business.

I usually just see a gyn once a year and eye doc every two for prescriptions that I wouldn't get otherwise. I have pretty bad teeth, so also end up at the dentist probably twice a year with various issues. After we moved here and finally got decent health insurance, we both went to see an internist. First time in about 5 years for both of us. Of course DH is fine but it turned out I had super high cholesterol (genetic). Last time I went to see an internist she found pretty bad anemia. At this point I don't want to wait another 5 years to find something, so now go annually. Except that our internist, that we love, is moving to Austin so we need a new one.

DH also prefers the "ask the guy at work" method to the regular office visit method.

I went more times this year than I have in the past 5-6.
6 month dental cleaning, OB-GYN, Endo (yearly bloodwork for thyroid), regular doc. Not to mention the fact that I changed GYNs 3x in this year alone. I always feel like you shouldn't have to settle for less-than-stellar care, and I'm very happy with the "new" doctors in my life Of course, in less than 2 years we'll pick up and move again for "the job" -- back to square one, I guess.

I have a family doc, for allergy meds, have to go twice a year for it. I don't like doctors I think they are weirdos! LOL

I never go, and the only times I have seen a doctor in the last several years has been in the ER (once for a bad fall on ice for an elbow x-ray, once for vomiting that just would not be stopped for days). I am always pregnant, see a midwife for prenatal/delivery, and "regular" non-OB docs don't want to pregnant people anyhow.

Same here! And, I never go to the doctor. It takes some serious symptoms before I'll bother. I do, however, see the dentist twice a year.

The other day I was saying to my girlfriend (who does not have kids) how my oldest was a snotty mess - seriously worst cold ever. She couldn't BELIEVE that I would send her to school.

She was telling me how her dad would wrap them up in bed with chicken noodle soup and let them sleep the day away until they felt better. Ummmmmm.... NO!

(It explains a lot about my friends though )
