  • Suzanne Somers--M.D. from Tom Cruise's medical school

Not sure if this is a debate, but put it here, just in case.

Things NOT to say. Because you look like a complete idiot. Being a movie star (marginal as you may be) does not make you a doctor. It makes you...a movie star.

    From today's AP wire.

SUZANNE SOMERS ON PATRICK SWAYZE'S PASSING

Suzanne Somers says Patrick Swayze should not have used chemotherapy
Actress Suzanne Somers attends a Blackberry Loves Mavericks cocktail reception for 'Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire' at the Royal Ontario Museum during the Toronto International Film Festival on Sunday, Sept. 13, 2009 in Toronto. (AP)

Suzanne Somers thinks Patrick Swayze could have been alive today if he would have used alternative methods to treat his pancreatic cnacer instead of chemotherpay.

The former "Three's Company" star, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1991 and rejected chemotherapy in favor of natural treatments, reportedly told Toronto-based columnist Shinan Govani that it was Swayze's chemotherapy treatments, not pancreatic cancer, that ended his life prematurely.

"They took this beautiful man and they basically put poison in him," she reportedly said. "Why couldn't they have built him up nutritionally and gotten rid of the toxins in his body? I hate to be this controversial. I'm a singer-dancer-comedienne. But we have an epidemic going on, and I have to say it."

Swayze died on Monday at age 57.

Dear Lord, the woman is an idiot. Very much like Crissy on Three's Company.

What an idiot. It would be funny if it weren't so, so sad (and personal rather than cancer in general). Nice backseat driving just days after he dies.

And really? She thinks NOW is the appropriate time to say this?
          Very tasteless.

That is ridiculous. I've been reading so many things that said that it was because of his use of chemotherapy that extended his life so much longer than expected. The doctors even quoted studies comparing the efficacy of chemotherapy vs. alternative treatments for the specific treatment of pancreatic cancer.

How easy it is to say, but the truth is (scientifically) he lasted much longer past his diagnosis than his doctors expected and was able to spend more time with his family. Her comments are disrespectful and hurtful...I still am proud of him for his fight and am glad for every extra moment he got to spend with his family.

and this is why People magazine and Entertainment Tonight should just go away. Honestly, someone is now going to forgoe cancer treatment because Crissy told her/him to.

This reminds me of Jenny McCarthy and the celebrity "advocates" who are opposed to vaccines.

Oh, she's a nut. Have you heard the things she was advocating on Oprah? Estrogen cremes and injections to maintain her youthful looks/reverse menopause. And this is a woman who has had breast cancer? I'll have to find the article. . .

EDIT: Here's some. Apparently, she's written a book about Bioidentical Hormones. The last link is from her blog. Yikes!

My MIL used bioidentical hormone cream to "treat" her menopause (NOT reverse it) and she clamed it helped her. She still has the worse case of insomnia I've ever seen since her menopause started 10 years ago. MIL hates and distrusts most doctors when it doesn't really count. For serious stuff she knows to do the right thing and see a doctor. The sad thing is there are lots of people out there that have the exact same attitude towards the medical profession. It's like they have some kind of agenda or something. Like my MIL, there is no real reason for it. She has never had a bad experience with a doctor's treatment. She just says they are all fat and can't be respected. WTF ever lady........

My mom is the same way... She got a really bad spider bite on her face, and she refused to go to the doctor. They live out in the country - there's no telling what kind of spider it was! She bullied the pharmacist into giving her some antibiotics (totally illegal...) *sigh*

My dad got his finger caught under his boat, and my mom just told him to pour some gasoline on it. (Yeah, gasoline.) It was really bad, so he went to the doctor a few days later. They said it had been too long to put stitches in it, but that it would have healed so much faster if they could have immediately.

I love my mom to pieces, but when it comes to going to the doctor, she's just crazy!
