kids' schooling options

Nice to see that site. Our school rates well, and the test scores are far above average. I don't have the patience or personality to consider homeschooling outside of a dire situation requiring it, and religious school is pretty much out of the question for me .... Especially in this VERY religious area. We targeted good school districts when house hunting, but I'd be lying if I said that there wasn't a whole lot of luck involved in landing at this particular school.

How would I know where the good schools are? Well, for DC I'd know because I grew up there. I know where the uppity public schools are (think mean girls) and where the 'good' public schools are. I'd be feverishly searching the web if we're sent anywhere else- I've heard that the Hawaii public school system is pretty awful. I hear good things about the DoD school in Germany. In Seattle, I'd be asking all of the iMSNers and for El Paso, it won't matter because I won't move to El Paso. Period.

Gosh, I'm glad I posted it! When I was looking for similar info during job search time last year, a ton of people recommended that site to me.

I didn't put much weight in the "star" rating (although our school has a great rating). Those are based on people logging in and giving the rating themselves -- so much like item reviews on amazon, one ticked off person can bring the whole thing down. What gave me the most confidence were the stats/test scores. (And that can open a whole new debate on the efficacy of standardized testing, but at the moment, that's how such things are measured.)
