  • Syria - are we getting the truth from the Global media?

I have to ask what part the US media isn't showing because I watch European news as well as the US News. There are two sides to the story, but one side involves murder and terrible crimes. I think that side gets shown, but I"m pretty hard-pressed to feel sympathy of any kind for the perpetrators of those crimes. There isn't anything that justifies that. I hate to nit-pik...I guess I was confused by your comment. I"m always up for a good debate around here as you know...

    Kris,

Let's hope the Taliban never protests for democracy then. I will send you a message if you don't mind... not trying to be a weirdo but I will explain that as well.

Actually, I'd love to read your point, too, Nel. If you're not comfortable posting in a thread (which I get), would you mind PMing it to me, too?

Ooh, nice article. I typically don't read editorials; only news at Aljazeera. I'll have to start perusing them.

I don't really understand how the standing government slaughtering civilians (including women and children) could ever be a defensible act. These are young people, college students who are rising up trying to overthrow a corrupt and violent government and being slaughtered in the process. They're not the freaking Taliban.

I'm not speaking for Nel, but I do think it's a reasonable question to ask, as the linked editorial did, what the result of an overthrow will be. That doesn't mean the government is right or deserving, it means, what happens next? I think we can all think of examples where the next has proven pretty dubious. I'll throw out Somalia as one.

There is always the question of who will fill the void, and yes, history shows it's not always better. What I take issue with is Nel's inference that these protesters are similar to the Taliban. The GOVERNMENT is slaughtering people. In my experience, that's been the Talibans MO.

It breaks my heart what is happening to the people of Syria. I don't understand any condonement of a genocide.

I don't either... but that is what was happening before the current regime... and what will happen if the current groups among the protesters take power. It will happen to the minority groups.

I'm not sure how this post got separated or placed in the debate forum.

I'll be honest. I called Nel out on this because we have had members here express concern for the safety of friends that they have over there. I was trying to get a clearer response for that reason, and I'm comfortable with keeping that private unless she is wanting to discuss it publicly.

I wrote a lengthy message to PrincessFiona... she can forward it unless I figure out how to do that myself. It is so long you might regret asking to read it lol.

Debates are wide open. I separated the posts per Rapunzel's suggestion in the original thread b/c the topic was taking off on it's own, turning into a debate. Nel is welcome to participate in the topic or not as she sees fit -- moving it here doesn't change the level of privacy at all -- just puts it in the "participate if you dare " forum.
