Never seen it, but just the thought of it makes me glad that...

I am glad I'm not a fundamentalist Mormon...

I would hate living with all those women. Ugh. It sounds like it would be like a really unfashionable, frumpy group of KKGammas minus the alcohol and elitism.

Never seen it either. Wasn't there another polygamist family on TV that wasn't related to the Mormon church in any way? I remember hearing a radio show about them. I think.

My opinion is that polygamy is oppressive to women. If the women were allowed to sleep around too, I would be much more in favor.

In theory I like the idea of it...a big family, people who love and support you and are there to help you, other people to share the load of caring for kids, household duties, etc BUT I couldn't share my husband with anyone. I've seen the show and they look happy, there kids seem we'll adjusted and loved, who am I to judge. It's not what I'd choose, but I don't see a problem with it.

I've never watched the show and or any interviews of the participants so I don't really have an idea of their particular neuroses. My guess is that since they're on a reality TV show they're fucked up somehow. No one without a diagnosable personality disorder or is some other kind of trainwreck agrees to live their life under the kind of scrutiny that comes with cameras following you around all the time.

I've watched this season to figure out what their life is like (and because I'm a reality tv junky - my guilty pleasure). I definitely don't agree with their beliefs and could never live like that, but, as civilspouse mentioned, they do seem happy so that's about as far as I care to judge them. I was hoping that this thread was going to be about the season finale though bc I literally just watched it and wanted to rehash it with someone! I know if I tried telling DH about it he would just be completely disinterested and move on.

This is one of those shows I've been meaning to watch, but haven't got around to it yet. I've always been fascinated by polygamist peeps.

I've watched it - not for me, but seems to work for them! To each their own - doesn't bother me at all.

I haven't watched it yet, but I read about it. So, homebirth. Interesting choice. I suppose that's cultural. Asking if Meri wanted her to be Meri's surrogate? That was really, really sweet. I wonder if Meri is going to take her up on it?

We don't have cable so I haven't seen it. (not that I would watch it anyway...) I don't want to judge, but it is so not right for me. NO WAY would I share my husband. Good gravy, there simply CAN'T be any polygamist physicians...who has that kind of time?! I have a hard enough time living with female family members, let alone some extra ladies who are sleeping with my husband.

That seems like it would open up a very interesting can of worms. Living with your surrogate whose children share the same father as the child the surrogate is carrying for you. AND the surrogate will help in the child-rearing? I cannot even wrap my head around it!

I was the one who used that phrase. I am confident that most reasonably educated people are aware that these folks aren't affiliated with LDS. I just used the phrase because it is the phrase used in pop culture to refer to these folks. I assumed that most people know that--while they may consider themselves some sort of "real" Mormons, having "returned" to church fundamentals--according to the LDS Church, they would not be Mormon. Any more than fringe groups of the Roman Catholic Church that are outside the See of Rome would be really Catholic. Or any more than the Westboro Baptist nuts are associated with any mainstream branch of the Baptist denomination. You can call a dog a duck, but it still barks, not quacks.

Sorry if I offended. I didn't mean to.
