The Varicella vax isn't supposed to eliminate all cases. It is targeting the worst cases that result in death/longterm health effects. I'm too lazy (remember I'm sick) to look it up, but I think it's 95% effective at eliminating those illnesses, so those may be the cases that still are ill, but not dying.

Really? I thought the cases were lessened. When DD1 had chicken pox, I'd never had them and it was just before the vax was common. They gave me the first dose of the vax in the hopes that it would lessen the case I'd eventually come down with, but I never got sick. Still to this day have never had chicken pox and have been exposed a bazillion times.

Yes, I also read that it was lessened. If you're referring to an increase in the number of shingles cases, that's not in kids who have had the varicella vaccine. It's in adults who have had varicella, and are no longer around kids with the disease, which would've boosted their immunity against varicella.

The shingles cases are much more prevalent in those who had Varicella as a virus, NOT the vaccine. I know this because my DS was one of the youngest cases of shingles known where we were, and what surprised ID most (we saw them in Peoria and had a curbside consult with someone in the Chicago area) was that he HAD been vaccinated. He was only two at the time, so the entire thing was surprising, but even more-so because he hadn't had the virus as an illness. When he presented with shingles, I went on a crazy rampage to find everything I could regarding Varivax and shingles, shingles in young children, etc, etc. I was the crazy mom who had the pediatrician checking for all kinds of immunodeficiencies, and kind of went crazy. At the end of the day, the kid just had a stroke of bad luck.-Deb

My ped hasn't given my girls the Gardisil vax yet. I asked when M turned 12 and again at 13. I need to get E in for her 12-yr check and will ask again. M wants to change to a female ped now, so I'm going to check with one of dh's classmates to see if she's taking new patients.

Re Varicella
Because I'd rather they just have it and be done with it. If they don't catch it by HS, then they can have the vax. I really don't want them to have the disease after age 14 and I almost trust the effectiveness of the disease more than the vaccine. When I was pregnant, I liked knowing I had it age 9 and had been exposed other times and not caught it vs wondering how effective my vaccine was and if I was at risk. See if I am as happy about this when my kid actually gets it and I have to deal with it
As for Gardasil, I'm still somewhat concerned about long term safety, but lucky for me there will be more info on it by the time N is of age. The religious factor bothers me, but it isn't the reason I would say no.Married to a newly minted Pediatric Rad, momma to a sweet girl and a bunch of (mostly) cute boy monsters.

Just that HPV is a STD, so if you are expecting your children to not have sex before marriage, it might be odd (not the right word) to get them vaccinated for one. I recognize that it is not solely sexually transmitted and you cannot completely control your children's choices, though.Married to a newly minted Pediatric Rad, momma to a sweet girl and a bunch of (mostly) cute boy monsters.

I don't understand the religious aspect of gardasil. She doesn't need to know anything other than it is another required vax that can prevent cancer. Just because she is vaxed against an STD isn't any sort of license for pre-marital sex. What if her partner had contracted it, boys are often asymptomatic.Kris

They can still get it AFTER they get married if their spouse had previous exposure, even if your own kid is pure as the driven snow. Not vaccinating them because sex before marriage isn't ok in your household won't prevent them from eventually getting it through even "approved" channels and comes across like punishment of they do somehow acquire it.
I don't see that as a valid reason to not vaccinate against any condition that could potentially kill someone I love, particularly my kid who I'm duty bound to protect in all ways possible.
