  • Same Sex Marriage

I want some real life opinion on this issue. I find it amazing that our current president has flip flopped on the issue so much and people are buying it!!

Anyway, I find it mind boggling that people don't care about the actual issue here. It isn't about same sex marriage, or TBH abortion, it is about the government being able to "morally" govern it's citizens. To me, this is just a slippery slope. I could care less if two men or two women marry, but I do understand those who do not believe it in. Yet, those people should not be able to force their beliefs on others on either side of the argument.

    Thoughts?

Same sex marriage is a civil rights issue. It should be legal and wholly supported by all the citizens of this country. All men and women are equal and deserve the legal and social and civil rights, privileges, and perils that come with marriage. Period.

I'm all for two consenting adults choosing to marry each other. Go for it.

He previously thought civil unions could work. When he realized that they wouldn't, his opinion evolved. Flip-flopping would have been going from being against gay marriage/civil unions to being for them. Flip-flopping also tends to include some denial that a previous opinion existed or changed. The president has been pretty candid that his opinion shifted.

What Heidi said. I believe all human beings are created equal, regardless of race, nationality, religion, gender, sexual orientation, and abilities, and that means equal rights and equality under law.

I feel like it's what he's believed in all along. He's just now admitting it bc before it was too risky. Same way with Romney and abortion. He was previously pro choice and now he's pro life. I believe he actually is pro choice but can't be the Rep nominee without being anti abortion.

This is why I hate politics bc I feel like everyone just lies or covers up their true feelings.

Every human being has a right to love whomever they want to love and marry whomever they want to marry. Government should stay the hell out of it.

One of my friends asked why do we pick Miss America out of 50 people and the President out of 2.

Really? "whomever" they want with no restrictions??

I'm totally playing devils advocate here, but honestly asking. Shouldn't we as a civilized society establish some restrictions? We can't let just anyone marry anyone they want. What if they what they want isn't moral? I'm not saying being gay is immoral, but I think we can come up with much better reasons to let gays marry.

Add "consenting" and "old enough to make a lifetime commitment" (however we define that age), and what exactly might be immoral?

This, sorry I didn't clarify age and consent. And yes, given those parameters are in place, anyone should be able to love and marry whomever they please!

Um, because they love each other and want to commit to eachother via marriage. What other reasons are needed?

                            These are my thoughts too.

However, I can't get all up in arms about this issue as I see more pressing problems. ie 15T debt, massive deficit...we are going to be bankrupt someday.

Basically exactly what Heidi said. There is not one single valid reason gay marriage should be illegal. Not one. If a church forbids gay marriage that's fine, no one is making them marry two people together they don't want to marry. But why the f*** does the church get to say who marries outside of their church? For a group that doesn't even pay taxes they sure hold strong influence over the federal government.
