  • The Ideal President Would...

I thought it would be nice to make a list of things that your ideal presidential candidate would be concerned with, or change (rather than simply focusing on partisan lines).

    My ideal candidate would:

-Do something about our heavy reliance on fossil fuels/harness wind & hydro power
    -Stop hydraulic fracturing
-Overhaul the Department of Education, and place someone with experience as a teacher in the Head Position
-Label GMO food/ban its production/refute Monsanto's patent on things like the soybean
-Overhaul privatized health insurance/fund more research on cancer and genetic disorders
-Recognize personhood for the unborn/protect a woman's right to choose (This sounds conflicted, but I think it can be done).
    -Recognize gay marriage
-Provide some sort of loan forgiveness to physicians (at least a percentage)
-Open up more areas for National Parks, or Parks and Recreation (locally)
    -More community gardens
Wife to Family Medicine attending, Mom to DS1 and DS2

    Hmmm, good question!

    - Brutally cut spending across the board
    - Raise taxes (I know... But it can be bad now or worse later.)
    - Recreate the public school institution; get rid of NCLB and allow a trade school path in high school for those who don't want to go to college
    - End the War on Drugs so we can drastically cut prison spending and funnel the money into rehab and training programs
    - Figure out a better solution to health care (No clue, but it'd be awesome)

That's all I've got for now. I'll think on it some more!

THIS THIS and THIS! I don't think it really matters who is president, the two sides have gone so far away from each other and so far from working together to compromise on ANYTHING that nothing can get done unless both branches and the presidency are the same party and that is definitely NOT the answer.

I'd be pretty tickled to have some set serious limits on the revolving door between government employees and lobbying firms, particularly where those government employees were supposed to be part of an oversight group for that specific industry.

            What LM said.
And off the top of my head...
--get rid of corn, wheat, soy subsidies. hopefully this would also end monocropping.
            --end Patriot Act and NDAA
            --end PPACA
            --allow school vouchers
--quit telling people what healthy eating is. They're clearly failing.
            --flat tax
--I have some unpopular ideas about beginning to fix social security, but I still want to have friends

Oh, and what DD said about the revolving door. That too.

I've thought about this a lot, but can't figure it out.

My wish list, partially copied-and-pasted from others:

                  from Thirteen:

-Do something about our heavy reliance on fossil fuels/harness wind & hydro power and solar
                  -Stop hydraulic fracturing
-Label GMO food/ban its production/refute Monsanto's patent on things like the soybean
                  -Recognize gay marriage
                  -More community gardens

                  From ladymoreta:
                  - Recreate the public school institution; get rid of NCLB and allow a trade school path in high school for those who don't want to go to college- Figure out a better solution to health care (No clue, but it'd be awesome)

                  My ideal president would also:
                  -- protect women's reproductive rights
-- MAJORLY cut funding to the military and space exploration, and re-direct that money to healthcare, green energy, and public transportation

                  -- abolish corporate personhood
-- make corporations and the super wealthy pay more taxes
-- ban GMO foods and eliminate Monsanto
-- pass the Safe Chemicals Act/ban carcinogenic chemicals
-- pass the Equal Rights Amendment
-- find non-violent alternatives to war
-- do something about the dental crisis (i.e. that hardly anyone can afford dental care)
                  -- end environmental racism
-- see prostitution as violence against women/decriminalize prostitution but arrest men who buy sex
-- increase funding for women's crisis centers/services, by heavily taxing all forms of pornography

It would be great if we could get congress critters and senators on board, but I'd be happy with a few pointed executive orders.

We should create one for congress, too. Good idea!

Probably a bunch of stuff on my wishlist is more for congress than the president, right?
