Hopefully this will lead to considerable legal amendments (both as regards clarifications and general liberalization). Let's not forget 1992, when the Irish attorney general applied for an injunction to prevent a 14-year-old statutory rape victim from travelling to the UK, in order to prevent her from acquiring the right to have an abortion. The national and international outrage at this led to some amendments to the laws surrounding abortions and it is not inconceivable that this case will have the same effect. Given that there are some signs that the Catholicism is losing its grip on the population of Ireland, in particular younger generations, one might hope that future governments may be forced to adopt more liberal stances on social issues.
