I have friends who have mentioned having trouble finding their bullets in stock. My brother switched to bow hunting (and has yet to kill a deer with it so I haven't had my deer brats in forever). I'm going to have to get him a gift card to Cabela's.

As ass-backwards as this area is and late to all things civilized, the world could end tomorrow and we wouldn't know until 2072...

Lol. I know. Living in NYC I just never thought about people (non-criminals) having or wanting guns. To the point that i really didn't know people on the other side of the gun debate. Here it is a whole different ball game. The whole mindset just appears to be completely different. My hair stylist was literally talking to me last week about assault weapons that him and his friends fire in the desert for fun (not to hunt). I just had no clue people did that sort of thing when I was living in NYC. Things are very different here.

I have a friend who has lived in Chicago all her life, and she was floored by how many people elsewhere own guns.

There's a lot of "Obama's going to take all our guns away!!" sentiment in this part of the country. I heard of stores being out of bullets (and a big increase in gun sales) here shortly after Newtown. I haven't inquired personally but it would not shock me in the least if our local Walmart and sports stores were still out. I do know the wait to get a gun permit in this state has gotten ridiculously long. My mother applied for a permit over a month ago and the time it was going to take for them to process her application was something outrageous. Also the line for the gun show that was here in January was insane. People waited for hours and hours just to get in, the local news covered it.

Based on the homicide rates, it appears that plenty of people in Chicago own guns.

I don't understand the desire to have guns. DH and I really disagree on this one, but we have none at our house, so I'm winning.

We also don't own guns, but most of my family does. Many of them are not secured, either. I am still shocked when I hear of people having loaded guns unlocked in homes with children, and they feel comfortable because their kids "know they'd get a woopin' if they touched it." But I have several friends and family who use that as their gun security system.

We also have a lot of family with guns, my dad in particular but he's in law enforcement and a big hunter. When they built their new house he specifically build a gun closet so that he could secure his guns, bows, etc. properly and its always the first door I check when we visit them to make sure its locked.

It is a topic that worries me as my kids get to visiting friends without me and such - does anyone here ask about guns in the house before you let your kids go to someone's house for a playdate? How do you ask?

We own some, and I enjoy going shooting with DH. Everything is unloaded and locked in two separate safes. We have them for sport (not hunting) and because DH is fascinated by them (from an engineering perspective). It doesn't bother me, but I totally understand both sides (pro- and anti-guns in the house).

Excellent question, SS. Never thought about it. Hmmm...
