I just saw an add for that company about two weeks ago and though, "wth, how can they make those health related claims?" Seems like a whole can of worms from a company who didn't seem to think through all the implications this data could lead to.

DH has had patients come in with their reports from this company but no symptoms. Why would you have your kid go through the trouble of being checked for something when they show no signs of it? If a genetic of metabolic disorder is affecting you, you'll know. Then you can get treated.

I read the article, and quite frankly, I'm surprised that people would blindly send in a sample containing DNA to some "company". Maybe I sound harsh, but it seems weird to me.

I know at least two who have done it for their whole families.

I've seen Groupons for this type of thing.

Wow!! That's nuts V!! I just don't think the average person understands DNA so they hear the advertisements from this company and likely feel that they are being proactive with their health. I have a really hard time understanding how a legal team for this company even signing off on all of this.

I've got genetic testing on my Christmas list. Lol. I have never seen it advertised for medical reasons, though - for all the reasons you guys mention, I think that's a horrible idea. I'm interested in the genealogy. I've got distant Native American relatives and apparently the Ancestry DNA detects markers.

I think the home testing market is intriguing, though. I wouldn't be surprised if it took off financially - not genetics per se, but diabetes, cholesterol, etc. It's a lot cheaper and I think people feel much more comfortable since the growth of the internet with self diagnosis, for better or worse. It's amazing all the tests you can buy online. And I don't see any regulations being passed against it with our current anti regulatory, free market political trends.

                    I should look at investments...

Dh and I have both done testing for ancestry as well.

Holy crap, that's like a Maury or Springer episode on a shelf!

I've been weary of this company since reading about some shady financial stuff regarding the owner and her husband, Sergey from Google.

I've done prior to pregnancy because we're both are in a risk group and needed to make sure we're not carriers.
