I have no idea if this belongs in Debates, but I put it here…just in case.

    I think it's a great choice.

Most of you are well aware that I'm not religious in anyway, whatsoever, but I can totally get on board with this decision.

Yep. Religious or not, hard to not smile at a guy who is so humble.

          I like him, very much.
I wish more people (myself included) could serve others with such compassion and humility.

Certainly an improvement over last years repeat of Barack Obama (appropriate in 2008, unimaginative as a repeat just 4 years later)

              Agreed!

DrB and I are not religious. I grew up Methodist and his family is Jewish. We've been doing pre-marital counseling with the pastor who is marrying us (the pastor is from my parent's church) and she keeps poking at us to decide what religion we will be and where we will take our children. He actually brought up Catholicism after seeing the man of the year. I was surprised.

Regardless though, organized religion is not on our priority list. It isn't for us.
All that aside though, congrats to the Pope. He's been impressing me for sure!

Not religious, used to be Protestant, but my impulse is to say "I like the guy." Weird, though, because I used to say that about Obama. I do think the pope is good for the Catholic church right now but on a long enough timeline everyone's shortcomings begin to show, even if to the entire world.

I thought it was an appropriate choice. Really either of the top choices (Snowden or the pope) would've been excellent.

Warning, this comment adds NOTHING substantive to this thread, but I'll let my inner adolescent out.

I adore the Pope's focus on radical compassion. It is time for Christianity to get back to basics. I think that the criticism of him abandoning the tenets of the faith are ridic. He's doing no such thing. He's reminding us that our Father commands us to love one another to show our love for him.

This mainstream protestant is cheering loudly from here. !Viva el Papa!

Also not religious here, brought up Catholic, tested the waters with other faiths, and also can't get on board with organized religion. But think he is a great choice!!!

What Kelly said. The changes a lot of the media seem to be hoping for/implying wishful thinking but he is definitely putting hard core focus on great area
