In the next elections, I will only vote for candidates who have demonstrated an ability to work across the aisle. Normally I'm just a cog in the wheel. But in this instance, I do have a little bit of power in my voice. I'm a minivan driving swing voting mom from Ohio. So listen up, political wonk knuckleheads, get along or I'm gonna knock some heads together. My children behave better than this crap.In my dreams I run with the Kenyans.

Find commonality where it exists, yes, and create community with those who have completely opposite viewpoints. So tired of being angry.

I remember, back in the day, when things were not so delineated re: Rep/Dem. I voted several times for Dems in TX, where the Dems were simply more conservative than Reps.

Total tangent:
I am reading a book called The Plantagenets - it's a history of the pre to post War of the Roses period in the British Monarchy. I was fascinated by the story of the civil war between Empress Mathilda and King Steven after Henry I died. Both had a claim to the throne. Neither could hold a majority for long. They were at war for twenty years. The interesting part was how it ended. The people just got sick of it. They had a few battles in which the troops on both sides just mutinied. They were just sick of it. The country has fallen in to disarray because of the constant flux of legal systems as one or the other briefly took power. Anyway, I saw a lot of parallels to our own flux state between Dem and Rep. I'm sensing that people are almost fed up enough to drop arms on either side.
Interestingly, the civil war ended when King Steven declared Empress Mathilda's son as his heir and they ruled together for a few years before his death. Kind of how the War of the Roses ended with a marriage between Lancaster and York houses.
Wonder if we will see a third party rise or a split ticket for presidency soon.

What truly horrible people.

I've never understood why people dig on a politician's family simply because they're related to someone they disagree with. I disagree with a lot of people, doesn't mean their family members deserve ridicule for something like their physical appearance.
I also think the sarcastic "Oh, but it's OK if you're a D/R," is pretty lame, too.

ITA.
I'm usually all for MSNBC propaganda since I lean left, but this was just wrong. FWIW, I think we all have to start calling out the BS on our own side of the aisle for awhile. The name calling across the aisle is just routine and has no impact.

I can not see myself ever voting for a republican because I have never heard of one that comes close to aligning with where I am socially. Social politics are a lot more important to me than fiscal politics. If there were a candidate out there who was republican and supported gay marriage, was pro-choice, supported stem cell research, wanted a separation of church and state, and didn't want to go to war with every country that appeared "naughty," I'd at least consider that candidate. I have yet to see one of these though, and am firmly in the liberal camp. So, while I don't register as democrat, I'd rather have a democrat in office in our current political makeup.

I will like to see how the Republican's "modernize." It seems like the general feeling is that they should "get with it" and at least support gay marriage and (if not abortion) but I'm pretty sure the tea party has more power being a part of the Republican party than forming their own so will be surprised if it ever happens.

These are not most tea partiers (and I personally detest Michelle Bachman. I think she is grating, phony, and fringy). Most tea partiers are fiscally focused. Just like among some lefties, there are wacko tea partiers, too. The press just tends to rejoice in tea party wackos, while often ignoring the left's nuts. A LOT of tea partiers I know are best described as libertarians. Sleep with who you want, have the contraceptive that you want, do whatever you want without hurting others…but don't make me pay for it -- that kind of thinking. Less government is better for everyone mantra.
Many female conservatives or liberatarians (not the talking head pundits who get paid to be opinionated) but ordinary folks like myself, have been heckled and berated into silence. It is just not worth it anymore. Look what happens to any female conservative by the press. It is almost as bad as what happens to African American conservatives. You just get pilloried. You get slut-shamed if you are attractive (but not a slut, like Palin) or you get called stupid. Or worse, self-deluded and a victim of the male hierarchy. And the "women's interests" groups abandon you. They aren't remotely supportive, even though they claim to speak for women. No, they really only defend those women who they believe properly represent women. It's completely pointless to even speak up.
I don't even bother discussing politics anymore. I just quietly keep getting pregnant and raising kids. Maybe I can contribute via demographics. ha!
I am not a huge fan of Sarah Palin, but I did like something she said a couple of days ago: it was something to the effect of, "Our goal should be to make the federal government as irrelevant to our lives as possible." I could go for that. BIG TIME. I would really prefer that the major government influence in my life be at the local and state level.Last edited by GrayMatterWife; 01-03-2014, 11:47 AM.

What is now called the Tea Party was hijacked very early on by neocons. It's a way to try to rope in people with libertarian leanings by using a label which means nothing. As a libertarian Republican who is actually an elected party official the Tea Party label is more of a media thing than a representation of any reality. I meet pretty much all of Vanquisher's criteria on social issues as well. As far as I am concerned the government should be severely limited to the point of being unnoticeable in everyday life. I was a huge Ron Paul supporter, I think Romney was a terrible choice for president, and I know a lot of politics and "news" is just for show - bread and circus. I don't care what you do in your bedroom, medical care should be between a doctor and patient, marriage should be a private contract between consenting adults, outlawing substances only helps mobsters and the prison industry, and we shouldn't be an empire forever invading and expanding.Last edited by Rapunzel; 01-07-2014, 09:09 PM.Who uses a machete to cut through red tape
