    http://www.cbsnews.com/news/kansas-j...child-support/

What do you think? I think this is absurd. If he starts to pay child support does he all of a sudden get to be a part of the child's life?

This case is so screwed up and just another example of what morons we look like in this state. Here are the issues.

    - They didn't use a physician so he's not "technically" a sperm donor??
    - Anyone in their right mind, using a physician or not should have spent a few thousand dollars to have a contract drawn up.
    - The child has TWO parents - its not the guys' fault IMO that they are on state assistance.

And one point I saw someone make about this in another discussion was - if a dead beat dad gives up his parental rights he's not responsible for anything, correct? So why is this guy.

    ABSOLUTELY ridiculous IMO!

I think if he has to pay for the kid, he should get full custody.

I feel for the guy too. And the mothers should be ashamed--although I'm confused as to whether they or the state pursued it. I agree on the contract but wonder if it would have been thrown out anyway

The state pursued it, not the mothers.

The state pursued it because one or both of the mothers had applied for state assistance.

Unless I misunderstand, he is a donor in the same sense that donors are through sperm banks. He just didn't get the correct paperwork done. To me this is the same as saying that any person who donated to a sperm bank is financially responsible if the birth parents need public assistance.

They not only neglected to do the requisite legal paperwork, but they also didn't use a physician. It was essentially a "home" insemination, which makes it not legitimate in their state.

If he is required to pay support, then shouldn't he get joint custody? That is so effed up in this situation.

Not necessarily. Even parents who are not allowed visitation still have to help support their children.

Yup. Custody and visitation are two separate issues that are frequently decided at the same time and are marginally related, as in the amount of time at one house versus time at the other house might determine non-custodial parent's financial support level.
