  • Winter Olympics Safety

I'm not sure if this belongs in debates or sports. Are you worried about the winter Olympics? I have a horrible feeling that something bad is going to happen. I hope I'm wrong, but I just have an uneasy feeling.

I am too, I just fear it's going to be really really bad. If the US says they have a plan to evacuate thousands of athletes, families and fans I'm worried.

Meh. I hope I'm right, but all modern Olympics are rife with security concerns. I think it will be fine. We tend to go overboard with fear and worry regarding security IMO.

I hope it's overhyped, but Sochi is damn close to Chechnya.

We've got a good old family friend who is there. Justin Olsen, one of the bobsled team members (he was on the gold-winning team last Olympics), lived down the street from us in San Antonio, and he and my brother were best friends. I hope everything is safe!

I agree. Other teams don't seem too concerned.

I'm more concerned with the safety of the buildings and such. Too much money given toward the infrastructure has disappeared.

Jenn, whatever happened to your plan to attend with N?

LSW I was just coming here to post that very comment. It's startling to see some pics of the water allegedly coming foe faucets, water in electrical sockets, etc.

It doesn't surprise me really. I just hope the media doesn't go overboard with all the drama over hotel conditions etc. It's not fair on the athletes.

I don't know why, but I just read an article saying that Sochi officials have hired some "private contractor" to kill the many stray dogs around Sochi. Apparently stray dogs are really common and generally widely accepted as part of the community(ies) in Russia, but Sochi doesn't want the image so they are just shooting them with poison darts instead. Wow. WTF. Approx. 5k-7k are dead in the past few weeks.

That in itself is enough to make me want to boycott!

Read up on what they did prior to the 1980s Olympics. The dogs are nothing in comparison. Although I wouldn't be surprised if same methods were used this time.
