They were talking about this on NPR today. They had a sickening theory that the plane shut down communication and other "non - essential" systems in an attempt to "save itself" when mechanical problems began. Non - essential systems would have included oxygen which would have run out in about 30 minutes, before gas. ... I haven't been able to get the thought out of my mind.

I can't stop thinking about United Airlines Flight #93 that crashed in Shanksville, PA on 9/11.

They think they may have found debris

It looks like a door. Mom said there are parts that will float but it may take a week to surface.

They've put on the back burner the stolen passports as a link to terrorism. They've also dismissed the oil slicks as evidence of the crash and dismissed the recent debris linked above as evidence of the crash.

Now they're focusing on mechanical errors and a possible suicidal pilot. They're also considering extending the search into the Indian Ocean. They say they've covered the area thoroughly and new evidence from satellite pings suggest the aircraft flew for four more hours after the transponder was turned off.

They've also created a wiki page for it: Malaysia Airlines Flight 370

I think this is the mechanical error my Mom was referencing, but it appears the aircraft didn't crash like I thought. I was confused because my Mom cited several crash examples including what happened on the Hudson river with the birds hitting the plane and stalling the engines. Still my Mom thinks those are the most likely outcomes and it's at the bottom of the ocean.

In 2005 a Boeing 777-2H6ER aircraft with the registration 9M-MRG, serial number 28414, operating as Malaysia Airlines Flight 124 flying from Perth to Kuala Lumpur experienced an ADIRU (air data inertial reference unit) fault resulting in uncommanded manoeuvres by the aircraft acting on false indications.[104] In that incident the incorrect data impacted all planes of movement while the aircraft was climbing through 38,000 feet (11,600 m). The aircraft pitched up and climbed to around 41,000 feet (12,500 m), with the stall warning activated. The pilots recovered the aircraft with the autopilot disengaged and requested a return to Perth. During the return to Perth, both the left and right autopilots were briefly activated by the crew, but in both instances the aircraft pitched down and banked to the right. The aircraft was flown manually for the remainder of the flight and landed safely in Perth. There were no injuries and no damage to the aircraft. The ATSB (Australian Transport Safety Bureau) found that the main probable cause of this incident was a latent software error which allowed the ADIRU to use data from a failed accelerometer.[105] The US Federal Aviation Administration issued Emergency Airworthiness Directive (AD) 2005-18-51 requiring all 777 operators to install upgraded software to resolve the error.[106]

So now my dad thinks something mechanical (or possibly terrorism related) happened to cause rapid decompression and everyone either froze or suffocated and the plane continued on autopilot until it ran out of fuel.

He also said he tested the oxygen masks on the plane he maintains once and they would work because the pilots had spilled too much coffee on the area they were stored. Nice?

This is the theory I heard on npr yesterday. Today, they theorized that the plane landed somewhere.

I'm inclined to believe it's a mechanical malfunction. For me it's very confusing reading all the reports and theories. One country says one thing. Another country discredits it. Then another country says another thing and yet another country discredits that. Now the US is saying they have evidence that suggests the plane flew for 4.5 more hours towards the Indian Ocean and they've diverted some resources to search this area after a six day search for the missing flight in the original area.

My Mom also talked about the decompression and people going unconscious before freezing theory but it seemed she believed more in the theory it was a related to the software malfunction of the 2005 Malaysian flight that indicated the same turn around error prior to the mechanical malfunction that gave continuous incorrect readings making the plane uncontrollable. It may be any combination of things and an unknown factor that we haven't seen before. I hope something comes up soon and we have answers but Mom says most of the crashes go unexplained.

I cannot believe how pre-occupied I am by all of this. I can't let it go, and this is not normal for me. Maybe I am just avoiding board review.

Do you get the distinct impression that whoever is running this investigation ship is the one with the navigation problem? Who is running this goatshow?

These people don't seem to be able to find their butt with both hands. Every two seconds, the story radically changes. There was debris. No, their wasn't. There was an oil slick--no there are two . Wait, no, they aren't oil slicks. China has a picture of debris. Wait, no--that picture wasn't supposed to be released. It was leaked (so, wait…was it debris or not?).

No wonder the Chinese family members were throwing water bottles at the officials.

How agonizing, believing: your relatives died in a midair explosion--they didn't feel anything but their bodies were essentially vaporized over the ocean; no, they died a horrible death by asphyxiation in a mid-flight decompression; no, they were alive for four hours while the plane hobbled along, before careening unseen into a vast ocean, smashing into oblivion on impact; no, they were hijacked and flown to a foreign country and are alive but being held by international terrorists; no, they smashed into a swamp on the Vietnam peninsula; no, they may have died in the middle of the Indian Ocean…wait, did we say Indian? We mean the South China Sea…or maybe…yes, it must be pilot suicide, despite the fact that there was absolutely no audio exchanges that suggested any of the OTHER pilots on the plane thought they were in distress.

At this point, I am voting for the "they were taken over by Iranian terrorists who flew the plane (for hours, over numerous nations, undetected) to an undisclosed foreign country where they are now collaborating with space aliens to reenact the building of the ancient Egyptian pyramids in Germany" theory.

These family members must be beyond grief.

Theories today besides US officials saying it's likely at the bottom of the Indian Ocean:

Military radar data suggests missing Malaysia plane flown deliberately toward Andaman Islands

This is a map of the way points that were navigated. The flight path tracked on Malaysian military radar can be done either manually or programmed into auto pilot. The Malaysian government has asked for radar tracking from neighboring countries as that was the extent of their tracking capabilities. From the way points of those islands the plane can head either towards Europe or the Middle East according to the article. However, we'll probably hear someone discredit it that there wasn't enough fuel or that Godzilla came out of the sea and grabbed it. Word on the street is he's pissed about Fukushima and also the way he was portrayed in the recent movie.

                          and the other theory is:

Chinese state news agency Xinhua is reporting tonight that a Chinese seismology and research group detected an “earthquake wave” in waters between Malaysia and Vietnam at about 2.55am local time last Saturday.

“The sea floor event could have been caused by the plane possibly plunging into the sea,” the group told Xinhua.

“The strength of the earthquake wave indicates the plunge was catastrophic.”

The area is 116 km northeast from where contact with MH370 was lost and is considered a non-seismic region.

Yep, refuted. Malaysian government refuted that the engines sent data for several hours after it disappeared. Then the makers of the engines backed that claim up that the engines didn't send data after going off radar and they continue to support the Malaysian government. The Malaysian government conceded this could be a long investigation taking weeks, months or years.

In a 180 turn from yesterday's theories - after examining further evidence - it's considered a deliberate act and the official word from Malaysian authorities is that it's a hijacked plane. All other theories are now on the back burner as they refocus on crew, passengers, and cargo for motive. Plus the search for the missing plane continues in the water in addition to on land. Some reports now say it had up to 7 hours of fuel and could have flown as far as Kyrgyzstan.

I don't even know what to say. I give up!
