    Gun Control/Rights

We are Democrats and have shot guns which we inherited from my father who devoted his life to stopping gun violence on the streets. They are in a big gun safe. I grew up around guns. I don't like them personally. I have no problem with legal guns, it's the illegal guns saturating our country on the streets I have an issue with.

I'm holding out on buying a gun until Norman Reedus tells me I need to.
Hell, maybe I should buy a bow first instead.

I agree with this. Civilians owning semiautomatic guns is ridiculous.

Just because it's in the constitution doesn't make it "right." Women did not have the right to vote until 1920.

We are about as politically left as you can get and we own multiple guns, go target shooting, hunt, and are considering getting a couple pistols to take with us when we go out in the mountains because of all the bear and moose sightings within 15 miles of our home.

I'm OK with responsible gun ownership. I'm not OK with everyone arming themselves to the teeth out of fear.

This, and also I see no reason for semiautomatic weapons. We don't own guns and never will. I didn't grow up around them at all. DH did, and goes on a bird-hunting trip with his Dad almost every year (more to be with his Dad/brothers than to hunt, but he does hunt on the trip).

I don't understand why any non-military member would need access to automatic or semi-automatic assault rifles, either. Owning them? Yeah, no. Not necessary.

I'm with most of you. Okay with responsible gun ownership, all for restrictions out the wazoo. We will never have one in our home though. Ever.

I think the big misconception here (and I'm not assuming you believe this, but I know many do) is that "illegal" guns are all coming from somewhere other than the US. "Illegal" guns are still bought and sold right here at home, through gun dealers and the same avenues that "legal" gun owners use to acquire them. They are stolen from legal owners, bought legally by someone and then sold or given away, or they are sold to criminals by legally licensed but corrupt gun dealers. They're not all being smuggled over from Mexico or something--tougher US gun laws WOULD significantly cut down on the use of "illegal" guns.

I know they're not all smuggled in from Mexico or whatever. I have a problem with people not legally owning guns. As in, being bought off the streets or whatever.

Totally. Personally, I believe the best way to limit those illegal weapons is at their legal sources.

I agree with tougher gun laws.

I'm for stricter licensing. I've mentioned that before on Facebook in a thread with some true Second Amendment types and you'd think I'd basically said I was planning to go door to door and arrest people with guns. (And of course, lock up all these "freedom lovers" before proceeding to my total takeover of the U.S.) *eyeroll*

I'm not sure why we can't be reasonable about these things. I actually agree with almost everything everyone has posted in this thread, and we are all over the map politically.

I think the only way any gun law change will come about though is if a Republican proposes it. I think otherwise it will be seen as some type of takeover by the crazy liberals. (Ditto with abortion limitations: they need to come from the Democratic side or they will be seen as the "war on women".)

I think the NRA basically works for gun sales, not gun rights.
