  • The VA scandal

What is everyone's thoughts on the VA scandal?? I always though the VA was really slow and difficult to navigate. Is this new news really news at all?

Same here. DH and his colleagues have been complaining about the way the VA is set up for years.

Honestly, I know it won't be, but I hope it's a wake up call to people that the US government sucks at running healthcare.

I also hope it's a wake up call. No one deserves to die while waiting to see a doctor in this country.

I heard the investigation was focused on 25 VA sites. Our local VA I don't think is included. Anyone know of the others?

When we ran simulations for our residents that contained issues related to ethics and professionalism, they always would make comments that such would never happen. They were never surprised once we put them in the VA setting...the majority of our scenarios are based on actual cases. So.very.sad that this is how we care for our veterans.

I thought I heard 42 sites on NPR tonight.

I'm a military brat. My experiences with military medicine were mostly less than impressive (though there were some good docs). DH works with 2 VAs and there are regular problems that interfere with patient care. A few months ago, there was a patient who died because of VA mismanagement. The patient did not need to die.

To me, this is all not news. Frankly, we owe our veterans better care than they are getting.

                Nothing will change though.

How could anyone possibly be surprised by this?

And this is what the federal government does for its veterans…can't WAIT for ObamaCare!

Yep, the VA is a known entity and all healthcare will go in this direction as the government takes over and the IRS is in charge.

I'm not surprised, but it's just so terribly sad. I hate to think of those poor men and women and their children, and know that we are failing them so miserably. I would happily have my taxes raised if it meant better services for them. They really deserve a better healthcare system than civilians have access to, IMO. The whole thing just makes me so mad at everyone involved in this.

We have a very good family friend who is a doc at the VA here in ATL. He is just devastated at all the bad press. He is deeply committed to what he does. It is so demoralizing for those in the system that are trying to do right by the vets.

We have several friends that work at VAs across the country - all also deeply committed to their patients. However, all have complaints about the bureaucracy of the system which makes their job unnecessarily challenging at times.

I can't imagine it's the doctors or nurses who are causing this. I'm sure they're just as heartbroken as we are, or more so because they have to see it firsthand. I put almost all the blame on the politicians and the hospital administrators.

You are getting Obama care? I tease. The only people I know (two of my family members) that have it really like it. No one seems to like the VA. What a cluster!
