Posting this is debates but I don't really think this is debatable.

Not only do I think this is in extremely poor taste and unethical, it definitely violates HIPAA -- I don't care if you blur the faces, you can still recognize the information and link it with a patient.

I am sick to death of reality tv, but this is especially exploitative.

    That poor family.

Look, I'm not HIPAAs biggest fan, but this is just so wrong.

I also like a bit of reality tv.

This is so unethical, though. To put someone's death and grieving family on tv without permission is beyond the pale.

And, I don't like Dr. Oz, so I hope they get in big trouble.

      Hm. Interesting.

We just watched "Code Black" a few weeks ago; it has a LOT of filming in the ED (the movie takes place in LA County's ED, and shows their transition from their old building to the new, a few years back, from a rotating med student and then resident's POV), and the director was there and answered questions afterwards, and he said that they have REAMS of consent forms; they got permissions when they filmed, and then again once the film was edited, from every single person who appeared in the movie (only one person consented the first time and opted out the second). There were panned shots of packed waiting rooms, and he claimed that every face in those shots consented twice. They had the permission of the county to film, and I don't think there was any financial benefit to the hospital or county for allowing it, though I don't know for sure.

I hadn't considered the idea of the mere act of filming being bad, or a violation, or people wondering when presented with a consent form if they'd get worse treatment if they didn't sign, and I'm not completely convinced I agree with those arguments. Obviously, the show should NOT have used the footage without consent, even with blurred faces, and obviously the show is not "news" if it's highlighting the love lives of the doctors, it's just reality TV. It was horribly insensitive to not inform the family and ask their permission to film, and the motivation of "we need more trauma for the show" is obnoxious at best. It'll be interesting to see how the lawsuit plays out, and how it affects reality TV in general, and hospital-based ones in particular. I watched a lot of "Trauma: Life in the ER" and "Resident Life" when they were on, and they always seemed reasonably sensitive to the patients, to me. Maybe they weren't?

The whole thing is just ghoulish. It's obscene to make someone's gruesome death and his family's anguish into entertainment.

I can't even imagine finding out that one of life's most searing and private moments was recorded without my knowledge, let alone broadcast on national television. I'm finding this horrifying.

                NY Med

It shocks me that medical professionals will participate in a show like NYMed. Their jobs are SO intimate, things do go wrong, even when things go right, they are filming where people are dying. Maybe this will put a stop to some of it (I hope).
