Prayer in government meetings/forced participation

I'm at my city hall, about to go into a meeting where they will discuss changes to the current practice of a prayer and the pledge to open meetings. I stand for the pledge (do not say Under God), but I support this citizen's right not to.

I think standing for the Pledge of Allegiance is a sign of respect, but it totally confuses me when there are prayers to open meetings. I'm fairly religious, but I'm also a pretty big believer in separation of church and state. I'm hopeful you'll be with people who have the same idea.

Someone said this in a public forum? That person ought to be on TV. I bet they feel the same way about the "wrong" type of Christians such as Catholics or Mormons.

I agree with Deebs. I've always been uncomfortable with prayers at a government function.

There was just a Supreme Court ruling upholding it this last term (Town of Greece v. Galloway).

The legislature begins with a prayer and the pledge every morning. I've said the pledge more times in this job than I have since elementary school.

I should have said something more than uuuuuuhhhhhhh. I wasn't planning on speaking, but decided I should actually stand up for what I believe!!

The city voted to have a moment of silence and the pledge as opposed to prayer. Furthermore, standing is not considered compulsory anymore. A win in my book.
