I completely agree with you. But I don't think our government should legislate for stupid. They do, I know they do, but that doesn't mean they should.

I think this is just ANOTHER case of the government not listening to the appropriate experts (medical officials, public health officials, etc.).

I fear the mass hysteria of the uninformed far more than the actual spread of the disease itself.
People in large groups are as dangerous as a stampeding herd.

Yes. I also fear the direction we are headed. I see people criticizing decisions based on scientific fact and saying "well, yeah we acknowledge that it correct ..but we should do this because it will make people feel better" and I wonder what comes next.

We are headed through the looking glass.

There are too many elections this year for "governement" to be less willing to legislate for the uninformed.
Finally - we are finished with training! Hello real world!!

There seem to be too many elections every year. Hrrrrmph. They started campaigning for 2016 immediately after 2012. In 2008, they talked about 2012 within weeks. It's getting really ridiculous.

We need to limit that shit. Forget Ebola; the political system is going to kill us.

(ETA so I don't piss anyone off: they also started campaigning for 2008 soon after 2004, and 2004 quickly after 2000...)

i have 2 seconds before class starts.

The flu kills a lot of the young and old ... but not "normal" people really as far as I know.

And .. there are "quarantines" that happen. You can't come up and visit your preemie in the hospital if you have a flu-like illness. Some nursing homes restrict visitors who have flu-like illnesses as well. People sometimes react with anger about their rights being violated in these cases too.

I think this is a conversation worth having ... and it does no good to label those who disagree with you as being uneducated.

Well, yeah, but those are not quarantines of a person they are bans on entry to private establishments. If you wanted to take your parent out of the home or your premie out of the hospital and they wouldn't allow the child/senior to leave, they'd end up in court too. The difference is they are saying they will restrict this woman's movement by force if necessary and she hasn't committed a crime or demonstrated any illness, in fact, she tested negative.

It's filtering down to schools. They are encouraging a questionare protocal for all visitors at schools NYS. You will not be allow to deliver flowers to campus if you have been out of the country recently. I'm might be a little dramatic, but it's getting crazy.

They have canceled our school trips to Ghanda which I find smart and safe. There is no way I would send an nonhealth professional to that area right now.

But if we took every medical professional who's ever been in the same room with someone who's had the flu, and lock them in a tent with no shower or phone or flush toilet for the duration of the viral incubation period and then continue to isolate them if they show so much as a 100 degree fever, we will start running low on medical professionals and probably not do diddly to check the spread of the flu.

But Ebola isn't even as contagious as the flu when the carrier is asymptomatic, so I don't understand how Maine is going to justify using force and legal ramifications to enforce a so-called "voluntary" confinement on this nurse when there are SO many infectious diseases that doctors and nurses are exposed to regularly. It short-circuits my sense of logic.

How long has MSF been working Ebola outbreaks? How many civilians have they infected upon their return to developed countries? I feel like their protocols work.

That said, my DH says he'd voluntarily quarantine himself, outside our house, if he were exposed to a confirmed case. The disease is scary as hell and we don't know it as well as we wish we did. So I understand the better safe than sorry stuff...but I can't help but wonder if the politicians have seen too many zombie movies.

If she were actually sick, I would support quarantining her. She's not sick.

The flu analogy doesn't hold because those people have symptoms. And flu is a respiratory/airborne virus.

The man in Dallas' family didn't get sick because you're not contagious until you're having the massive GI symptoms.

I think the hysteria is horrible, really. Unfortunately, the CDC has been a moving target when it comes to its policies/statements.
What happened to the nurse is unfortunate. What I understand is she was screened at the airport and had a temp of 101? There were no good protocols in place for if someone had a positive test in an airport.

There is room for a calm discussion of the pros and cons of quarantine. ..how this should be handled. Unfortunately, it has become political.

How do you feel about the military policy?

She had a forehead strip temp of 100 because she was sweaty and flustered. She had a normal oral temp and negative a Ebola screen soon after.

                            They clearly overreacted.

There is still room for us to discuss ebola and what should happen as healthworkers come back from w. Africa.

I'm not sure how I feel about it, but I did hear Obama's take on it this morning on the road and (shockingly) I agree it is a different situation because this is their job. It really really sucks to keep them away from their families longer, but they will be paid and their jobs will not be at risk because of it. Most other people who would be quarantined are volunteers.
