How do you feel about kids suing parents for college tuition? What are parent's responsibilities?

Is this the one where the college expenses were part of her parents' divorce decree?

If dd is right, then did she claim that she was a third party beneficiary of their divorce settlement? Interesting. Wonder how that will impact future settlement agreements.

Will her parents be able to sue her for long term care expenses since they invested in her earning potential? I'm sure the gov would be happy to side step that community expense too....

It wasn't in HER parents' divorce decree - he cited an older case (early 90's I think) in which it did state that divorced parents were responsible for education.

I'm sorry I think its RIDICULOUS! She's over 18, they don't owe her anything. I think its great if parents CAN pay for your college tuition but there is no way it should be required. You're an adult - get a scholarship, get a job or take out loans - everyone else does the same!

This seems beyond absurd. It appears she is taking advantage of a loophole for kids with divorced parents. I hope this law gets changed soon. What a brat...

"The current "Newburgh" law applies to children of divorce, and is typically used to compel the non-custodial parent to contribute to a child's post-secondary education. But in this case, both of Caitlyn Ricci's parents agreed to foot the bill for college in state and if she followed the rules. But she moved out. I'm curious as to why Grandma encouraged the suit. WTF Grandma

I just so happened to catch the father calling into a local talk radio station and filling in some of the back story on this ridiculous lawsuit.

Apparently what set this off was the daughter being kicked out of a Disney internship after less than a month for underage drinking. Her parents brought her back and laid down the law, talked about what she needed to do to make up the lost credits, etc. She was on board with the plan at first, but after a week, she decided to stay with the grandparents (the father's parents). The parents were fine with at first, figured she needed a "cooling off" period. After a few weeks, he called his parents and said "hey, you need to send her home, where she belongs." The grandparents said no and he hasn't had contact with them or his daughter since. Her own parents didn't even know she was going to Temple until they read it on her Twitter. The least of his worries was his relationship with his parents, he was more concerned about his daughter. He said he and his ex co-parent to the best of their abilities, and they were on the same page with regards to this lawsuit.

I never had any expectation that my divorced parents would pay for school. I know they fought about it and came quite close to going to court again. In the end, they each paid about a quarter of my tuition for 4 years at our state school, the rest being funded by grants and student loans. I did not have any feelings of entitlement whatsoever. Obviously, this girl does, and I'm sure her parents did not expect those feelings would manifest themselves in this way. I feel for the parents and the damaged relationship they have with their daughter.
