Would either of you care to elaborate? Are you implying that they were cowardly and/or trying to maximize the violence? The time sounded reasonable to me. Most people are at home and businesses closed by then. If things got bad overnight, lots of folks would have the option of staying home. I wouldn't want to be stuck at the office or in the middle of my commute while a riot breaks out.

I don't know the details because I'm sure the media slants everything and I wanted to avoid all the opinions accompanying the reporting.

This whole thing breaks my heart.

I have to agree...I think they were trying to have as many people out of harm's way as possible.

As an added note, what does rioting help or prove in this situation? I understand it's group mentality but I feel like it causes more tension and pushes people to further extremes of thinking.

Not elaborating here. I'm actually done with this. And this is coming from the daughter of a former prosecutor and judge in Detroit.

I would really like to hear your perspective for these reasons (and because I generally like to hear how you think) but I will respect your request to not discuss it.

TBH as a seasoned member here, I've realized discussing severely charged issues like this, in depth here, especially involving race, is useless. IMHO. Especially as I'm pretty sure, the only black woman still participating on iMSN. So, I'm not elaborating on my thoughts on this very complicated issue, which most here cannot truly internalize. I'll end it with, I do not believe the prosecution, had the best interests at heart. The handling of this was botched from day one. It's not worth me saying anymore on.

                I respect this--

I fully support you in not wanting to delve into this.

I'm sorry you feel this way. It really is a charged issue. I haven't noticed anyone say something negative or hurtful in any way. I expect people may have differing perspectives but imagine they will be respectful.

Btw you aren't the only black woman here ... And we have a few ethnicities represented.

I can understand some of the reasons for the 8pm but I dont understand why they chose not to have the national guard there. It seems irresponsible.

I know a lot of people feel a miscarriage of justice happened. I don't know how I feel. I guess I don't know the evidence well enough.

I feel for the family involved. They lost their son and feel their was a miscarriage of justice. I wonder if they can appeal this?

The riots have done a lot to hurt innocent people though.

                    It's all really heartbreaking.

I'm well aware that other ethnicities are represented. But other ethnicities do not equal black. If there is another black woman here, she's not vocal about it at all like I and the previous members have been. I'm speaking on past experiences here, Kris. And trust me, I'm not the only current member who feels this exact same way.

I believe we do have another black woman. I know this from FB.

It sounds like you feel isolated as one of the few black women here and that makes me feel sad. You are a well-respected, loved member and race has no bearing on that.

I have also never heard of anything racially inappropriate happening here. I wouldn't know why someone would feel it wasn't okay to be open about things ... Maybe I'm wrong.

If I can do anything for you let me know. I truly care about you.

It all depresses me, too. I just don't see how this ever changes. I was frustated but relieved when the Trayvon Martin trial in Florida ended with an unsatisfactory verdict and everything stayed peaceful. No riots, even though people said that would happen. But...did anything change for the black community there? That case still turns my stomach. My kid is white, but he wears hoodies, is antisocial with adults and blares rap music at home. I can easily relate to the idea that these behaviors could get him killed and
someone could get off by just saying they "felt threatened". WTF?

I am weary because I only see these things changing slowly over time as people die off. Old views don't change, they just get suppressed to meet current expectations. It's only when a younger more melting pot world with actual different views gets to be fifty that we will see any progress. It's a long wait.

I heard a guy today say that people riot because they are so tired of not being heard and feeling ineffectual. It's a huge temper tantrum for attention, to be taken seriously. I get that. I'm not one to riot or run off and join ISIS but we have a lot of groups in our world these days that are frustrated that they re unable to make anything change. Honestly, I think this is why people were so happy when Obama was elected - it seemed so unlikely, but it happened. It didn't change much, but it felt like a win for the underdog at the time.

We need to fix the system if we want people to work within it.

I think the amount of ignorance in the media and among the protestors was absolutely stunning. I repeatedly heard--from a variety of races, ages, and education levels--comments utterly misconstruing what the grand jury's no-bill meant.

I thought that Bob McCollough, the prosecutor, did a really methodical, exhaustive job of explaining what happened.

There was a storekeeper on the news this evening, standing the middle of his utterly destroyed store, quietly crying, asking: "How am I going to feed my girls now?"

This is Ferguson. This. They deserved so much better.
