  • Board Certification

    http://mobile.nytimes.com/2014/12/16...html?referrer=

I personally think board certification is stupid. Just cause a doc is BC doesn't mean they're better. I can think of several who suck balls, in fact.

The money and monopolies that exist in medicine and propel doctors to always have to shell out $$$ for this shit is stupid.

You wouldn't believe how many people have congratulated DrK on "finally becoming a doctor" now he's passed the boards.

Yep, we are in the middle of recertification. He kept track of 3 months worth of cases. What a pain. He had to enter all of the info for every single one of them, all of the follow-up and everything. He will be taking the test in 2016 even though he doesn't have to do it until 2018 just to get it over with. Then it will last until 2028 ( whenever he takes it.)

The whole thing is certainly a racket. They can charge whatever they want, add as many hoops as they want and physicians have no recourse. I certainly believe continuing education is important, as I'm sure most physicians would agree but there has to be a better way.

I agree it's stupid. They're graded on a curve, so you pretty much have to pay for the $$$ prep courses, which really just teach them the most commonly tested cases (not the most common cases they will see in real life). We spent $6500 this year for DH's exam and courses, not counting airfare and hotels for all this crap. And his raise still hasn't come through. Grumble/whine.

100% in agreement with it being a bad choice fora gold standard in medicine.

The maintenance of certification for the APAP is ridiculous.

I'd be curious to see the % of docs that retire at a certain age because they don't want to go through recertification (as in "I'm retiring in 2017 because that's when my board certification expires" vs retiring for age or health or other reasons).
