  • Serena Williams

I'm writing on the fly here, but I have been following Williams' historic win and the bullshit response by a significant minority of commentators and all that she has had to endure. For the record, I loathe tennis, but I appreciate athleticism, strategy, creating new images about who belongs where (See, e.g. Misty Copeland), and Moxy.

Holy misyogyny and racism and old word socioeconomic order! A strong black girl with braids from Compton shattering the old world order. I'm half tempted to see who her sponsors are just to support them.

I honestly am APPALLED at what she has had to endure. While I'm pissed because of the social justice issue, but I also feel this at a micro level. Can you imagine if the thing that you worked for your entire life had to deal with these extraneous answers?
I'm personally pissed that I am raising a daughter who is subtly receiving the message, "It doesn't matter if you are the very best the world has every seen, you'd really should be pretty while you do it."

I'm out the door and on the fly...but wow. How is it our year of the Lord 2015 with this sort of crap still going on.
In my dreams I run with the Kenyans.

I've only seen some of it in passing, but one comment that really floored me was from another player's manager about how keeping her (whichever other player it was, I don't remember) ”small" and "feminine" was like a part of their strategy. Like it was somehow a part of the game, and something to be proud of, that she wasn't big and athletic like Williams. It disgusts me that that's even a consideration today. Play your game. Be a badass. Win. That's it. You don't get extra points for playing as a petite white woman.

      You get extra money! Blatantly.

      I think she's awesome.

        I liked JK Rowling's response. http://www.businessinsider.com/jk-ro...illiams-2015-7

It's stupid that this is thing. At our high school, the tennis players are the new cheerleaders: all blonde, perfect and mean. I wonder if it's country clubs.
