DH works with some untouchables whose temper tantrums have delayed or disrupted surgeries. I think they're taught from the beginning that it's okay, and if you're not the one having the fit, you just have to deal with it. He's not really in a safe position to report these incidents, and everyone higher up knows about them anyway.Laurie

Dh called bs on the glove story too. What surgeon would want to operate without gloves? Bizarre.
Dh said he doesn't hear much abuse directed at patients. The occasional comment about weight as they try to position obese patients (very difficult to position someone if they >500 lbs on a narrow OR table) but it's pretty rare.
He's encountered one racist guy at a place where he rotates and was horrified. They're apparently pushing that guy out but he's a long time partner so it's taking a while.Married to a Urology Attending! (that is an understated exclamation point)

Is my DH the only person who didn't/hasn't seen a lot of this in med school? He's been really impressed by much of the staff he's worked with. There was one resident who was super salty about everyone and everything and in the team room would make snide remarks about every patient they brought up - and a surgical attending who had some snippy remarks to one of his interns but...other than that what he's seen has been on the up and up and I think it's really made for a very enjoyable work environment for the med students especially.
I'm not doubting at all that there are cocky bad apples aplenty scattered throughout the specialties, which is unfortunate. I'm more surprised my DH hasn't seen much/any of what they are reporting here.Wife, support system, and partner-in-crime to PGY-3 (IM) and spoiler of our 11 y/o yellow lab

Yeah my dude hasn't seen it that much either. If sombody is difficult or having a bad day, they'll complain, but not in front of a patient (regardless of whether the patient is sedated or not).
Berating an idiotic resident or med student is one thing, but trash talking a patient is another.I'm just trying to make it out alive!

My takeaway from DH through the years has been this is primarily the realm of "old school" surgeons. I'd hope this is dying off with new generations.

There always have been and always will be people like that in medicine. Or finance. Or law. Or any type of career. It's just that now, people have recorders in the pockets. So we hear about this crap more often.
Although, IMO, only assholes looking for attention or a court case would actually record something like a medical procedure. I know that's not that whole point of the article but I still wanted to mention it.Last edited by corn poffi; 09-21-2015, 10:34 AM.I'm just trying to make it out alive!

My DH's dept ended up with 8 hours of sensitivity training when a Caribbean born resident brought back a penis statue of a black man from vacation to display on his personal desk that offended someone cleaning the resident room.Married to a Urology Attending!
