Do I see the commymommy starting to stir again?

When I first saw that video a few years ago, neither our income nor our net worth put us in the top 1%. Which was in itself pretty crazy, we had buckets of money coming in, and most of it was building wealth for us. But now, we are in the top 10% for net worth (top 5% for hubby's age) and top 1% for income. And...it's complicated. We worked hard to get here. But we were super lucky too. We pay our taxes...plenty of taxes. We don't mind supporting the progressive tax structure. But we don't really need to pay more taxes. I just don't know.

It's also worth noting that the inequality is so severe that the top .1% actually unbalances the top 1% in these calculations. Like, by a LOT. So just being a "one-percenter" isn't quite enough to tell the story.

There is a lot of commymommy left in me. I just am not willing to pay more than I already do in taxes. Unfortunately, I live in a state with a state tax. When you add up all that we pay in taxes, dh and I would be better off living in Europe where we would earn less but our kids would have free college and free healthcare.

That being said, I'm appalled by CEO/administrative salaries. The worst of it is happening at our hospital right now. It's outrageous, and maybe something for another post.

I want to believe in a living wage, but I have a hard time swallowing the idea that a McDonald's worker (and I was one) would make $15/hr when that is what I'll be making with my MA. Why did I bother to take out all of those loans? I've been looking for jobs lately, and some of the unit secretaries at the hospital earn almost $16/hr plus full benefits. The job requires a high school diploma.

I know my boss can't afford to pay more than what I'm earning. Why? Insurance just doesn't pay out for mental health stuff.

What's the answer? The people at the very top are making it impossible for others to move up.
