Before I go to bed I'll give a quick reply and offer more in the morning.

I voted to remain in the EU mainly because I lean towards a humanity that transcends borders. It wasn't about trade, banking or money in my pocket it was about my kids growing up in a world that looked after the less fortunate where ever they may be. The EU whilst not perfect did hold the idea of equality at its heart.

Your kids can still look after others wherever they may be. Borders aren't limitations to that. I'm sure your upbringing and guidance will lead them in the right direction.

This makes me afraid for the US in November. It makes it clear that it's possible that The Donald will win...which is basically the apocalypse. (Says a republican voter)

And the Scottish National Party will probably use the fact over all Scotland voted to remain in EU to get another independence referendum on the cards. Our community hasn't recovered from the last one yet

It sounds guaranteed that the referendum will come up for Scottish independence, and maybe Irish unification too?

I agree, T&S. There might have been solid reasons for the Leave vote, but it sounds like the campaign was driven by xenophobia and ignorance. If a majority of the UK could come under the spell of such low motives, then there is less hope for the US than I'd thought.

As a spouse in Academia, I wonder why it is that anytime someone disagrees with something that it's always chocked up to bigotry, hatred, xenophobia, etc.? Maybe people just like the idea of sovereignty. You get states like Greece and Portugal that put the rest of the EU on the hook for poor fiscal policy and crazy trade deficits, etc.. I don't blame people who wish to have more control over the health of their economy.

As far as here in the states, I really grow weary of the Trump is Hitler comparisons. Not all that different from some of the things said of Obama on the right prior to 08 and 12. I will not be voting for Trump. He is a narcissist. But the racism and bigotry labels aren't factual. Just a creation of the corporate media to steer you toward their candidate of choice. We will be just fine no matter who is elected. There is only so much a POTUS can do.

The racism and bigotry labels are pretty factual. I'm sorry you disagree.

Not to mention his questioning of an American born federal judge's ability to do his job purely on the basis of his Mexican heritage.

He is a racist, misogynistic, narcissist. Period.

I said there were probably solid reasons for the Leave vote, but that the campaign was designed to play on people's innate distrust of those who aren't like themselves. How is it not racist and xenophobic to create huge posters featuring waves of incoming brown-faced people as the central image of the campaign?

The part of the leave campaign that bothered me was the "promise" that money directed to the EU payments would now end up in the National Health plan. That was retracted immediately after the vote. In these times of economic cuts, people love to find a scapegoat that's taking all the money...and then vote that away in hopes it will right the budget. Unfortunately, those scapegoats are usually not at all related. I am a little jaded on this because I'm involved in local government in my small town and I'm weary of voters telling me that putting in more parking meters would generate the 2 million dollars needed to repair our roads. Even when we do that, which we plan to, we'll still be 1.6 million dollars short.

There are no easy, guaranteed and painless fixes to the financial situations we are in - and the UK may have just made theirs worse for the next 5-10 years. So if that was the motivator for the vote to Leave, it was a misguided one.

As for sovereignty, I get that. I have always viewed the coming together of the globe as a move towards peace, but I have learned that many others think these efforts are motivated by a desire to consolidate power over everyone for a single group. Obviously, these two views lead to very different decisions in voting. Rest assured, a vote for globalism from me is motivated by a desire for peace and harmony, not power and profits.

Disagree.
Anyone who suggests that we need to register POC who identify as Muslim, or keep out immigrants from Mexico because they are "all drug dealers and rapists" is perpetuating/normalizing bigotry and xenophobia.

People should be free to choose their own destiny even if that sometimes means greater economic hardship in exchange for sovereign independence. However what worries me it that a lot of it seems to have been driven by emotion and manipulated campaign information rather than objective assessment. If the markets stay down on Monday then the amount of global capital wiped out by the Brexit Yes vote provides an approximate estimate of the future profits those companies will not be making as direct result of the vote. For the Brits who voted yes, I hope the feeling of independent sovereignty is actually worth it.

You'll have to supply these racist quotes, as all current candidates have proposed building walls and limiting migration from states that sponsor terror. He definitely says un-PC things, but not racist. We're too easy to throw out these terms because it shuts down debate.

Windsurfer Is it wrong that I haven't checked my portfolio following the vote? I'm not sure the markets will recover by Monday, I think so many people are still in panic mode.
