What do you guys think of the terror alert system? Do you see it as a useful tool, necessary to warn people to "be vigilant"? Or do you think it causes unnecessary fear and panic, with the potential to desensitize people to future threats?
I was listening to the radio this morning and they were talking about the fact that Tom Ridge had included what seemed to a political "plug" for George Bush at the end of his announcement regarding the new information and elevation of the terror threat to "orange". He said something like <disclaimer: NOT quoting here>, "We wouldn't have this information if not for the leadership of this current administration." If he meant it the way it sounded, should the terror alert system (of all things) be politicized this way? Is it so implausible that we could (coincidentally, of course ) start seeing increased terror alerts as the election nears?
Do the terror alerts actually work? If nothing happens, can we assume that the alert was successful? Or that the information was wrong? Or that the terrorists decided that the heightened awareness of their impending attack was enough to thwart their plans? If they have such specific information, should the government quietly let the potential targets know, rather than alerting the world (including terrorists) to the threat? Isn't it possible that the terrorists are counting on everyone focusing on these specific targets to (1) study our reaction, and (2) use the "cover" provided by the increased focus on these targets to strike elsewhere?
I'm not convinced that the color-coded terror alert system that we currently have is that effective, I certainly don't pay attention to it or give it any heed in my day-to-day business. I'm not pretending to have a better idea, I don't know what the solution is.
