That does sound pretty fishy to me. Although I will say that Mayo was granted an extra spot last year but not until after the match (Neurosurgery is January, they found out in mid January after lists were already in), so if they had chosen to fill it they could have but since everyone they had ranked matched somewhere they chose to hold the spot open.
But Radiology is a March match so if he found out about the extra spot in January shouldn't it have been added to the regular match instead of being a "scramble"
And if its not true, if he did get the spot on his own merit, that really stinks for him.Wife to NSG out of training, mom to 2, 10 & 8, and a beagle with wings.

Well, all I can say is that for once, I wish 'life' wouldn't be 'fair' to me in a way that would actually benefit me.

Yeah, well, welcome to the world of radiology.
This is actually more common in this field than you might suppose.
People are taken into the upper-tier rads residency programs outside of the match all the time for various reasons (nepotism included). Because it's outside the match you don't generally know about it (unless you're involved in rads). And, actually there isn't a stigma attached to any of these people - because it is so common. Quite the contrary, the people who get top spots outside of the traditional match are generally regarded as the creme de la creme.
I know nothing about the case reported above, however. I'll have my husband read it and tell me if he's heard anything about it (rads is a smaller world than you might suppose)....Who uses a machete to cut through red tape
