Let me preface this by saying that my posting this on the 4th of July is completely coincidental.
I was watching Superhomes on Discovery Times last night and the episode on Moscow made me remember Romania. The situation they presented was strikingly similar to the life I experienced growing up. I have never been to Russia and I know television shows are known to distorts the facts so I'll talk about things I personally know.
One of the reasons the United States is so great is the freedom of speech, the fact that we can question our leaders without fear of being thrown in jail. The downside to this is that too often the citizens lose sight of how fortunate they are to live in such a wonderful country. So here are just a few things I am grateful for:
*Corruption is not a way of life here. Sure, we see it happening more often than we'd like, but you really have no comparison to speak of until you've lived in a 3rd world country.
*Healthcare system. No, it's not perfect but it's pretty damn close. Doctors here don't treat you only as well as your envelope is thick, if you know what I mean.
*Mortgages. Yes, mortgages are great. Some countries don't even have a mortgage system so if you want to buy that 4 bedroom, 3 bath home, you'd better make sure you have cash. Enough said.
*Immigration system. I may complain that they're slow and sometimes incompetent, but at least it works relatively well. And again, they don't expect thick envelopes to perform the most basic services.
and lastly...
*Our standard of living. Sure, there are countries that are better off but we still have it better than most people on this planet. Be thankful for it.
Have a very happy 4th of July!
