  • Flying...The *terrorists*

are sitting in their caves a'laughin.

So we have new concerns today because of the supposed foiled British Plot. First, there is the issue that my 3 older children are flying back tomorrow (has it already been a week!) and the fact that for some reason two of them (still don't know which ones) are on the "Do Not Fly" list. Obviously, this is a mistake, because they are just kids and on the way out it meant nothing more than a little extra inconvenience. Coming back this way now we aren't so sure. My dad is going to have to check into this issue in the airport tonight and again in the morning.

Then there is the issue of Fionnuala coming from Northern Ireland in 2 weeks. She was our first babysitter (we've known her since she was just 14...now she is a grown woman with 2 children). I just got off of the phone with her. She said that many in the British public feel that this might just be a publicity stunt because in Europe the UK has been put under a lot of pressure to address the Israeli/Lebanese conflict and has refused to do so. She also said that the apartments of all would be suspects were searched and nothing was found yet and that several of the suspects have now been released because there is nothing to hold them.

She has been notified now when she flies out here with her 3 year old and 1 year old she is not allowed to bring anything on board her flight except for the bare essentials. She will be allowed to bring enough pre-made formula to get baby through the flight and will need to *taste* it in front of the security guards before boarding the flight. She will be able to bring on only the number of diapers/wipes deemed essential and may NOT bring on extra underwear/clothing for her 3 year old who is basically potty trained but still has the occasional accident. Any tampons, pads etc must be carried on in plastic baggies. No snacks. She may not bring a coloring book, crayons or book for herself or her children. She also may not bring a video game, dvd player or other type of entertainment item and all bags must be checked in.

Holy shit...why travel? The would-be terrorists (if they even really were this time) have won this time.

What is next? Someone writes that they are going to carry explosives in their body cavities so we all get strip-searched before the flights?

At what point do people say "life is a risk". We should employ the best security possible and then...just fly. This is bs if you ask me. Seriously, Fionnuala is beside herself about how she will make a flight from the UK to MN with two small children and nothing to do for them. She said many flights are now just being cancelled as people aren't willing to go through the hassle. Can you blame them?

If this happens over here, watch the arilines tank.

Obviously, I don't think the terror bust in the UK was a hoax. I just thought I'd add that...I realized after re-reading my post that it sounded like I thought that.

DH has been working a lot since this happened on Thursday so he wasn't completely up on what had happened. Last night he saw the news and went off when he heard about the no liquids, etc. He said "well we won't be flying for a while, what a pain in the ass" I agree with him but I have to fly for work next week and my mom is coming to visit at the end of that week so she'll be flying too.

There was an article in the Minneapolis paper today about the difference between British investigations and US. They talked about how the US wouldn't have let them do their "test" run and that the only reason the British moved on the arrest was that the US hurried them along. In the US we'd be able to hold them but they can't with British laws and that is why some of them are now getting released.

I don't know why the terrorists keep focusing on planes. DH and I were talking about how there are so many other targets for them that would probably be easier and hurt or kill more people. Its sad what this world has come to, really.

I think the key is that a very small explosion is enough to open a hole in the plane, which at 35K feet would be catastrophic, while that small explosion in a crowded room would not be so catastrophic.

Thanks for clarifying Kris - I'm not surprised that Europeans are blaming everything on the situation in Lebanon. As I recall, the Jews were to blame for the Bubonic Plague as well.

The Irish babysitter story though brings to mind the single Irish woman in 1986 who was befriended by a Jordanian gentleman, who impregnated her and wanted her to come to Jordan, via Israel to meet his family and get married. He gave her a suitcase to bring with her as a carryon, and only by chance did the El-Al security staff at Heathrow check it and found it full of plastic explosive. Nice guy.
So yeah, I think not allowing a change of underwear for a toddler is excessive, but checking formula is probably a necessary evil.

        Crazy times.

As usual I'm with Fluff on this one. Remember how a few years ago we all b*tched and complained about taking our shoes off and not being able to bring nail filers and scissors onboard? And now nobody thinks twice about it. So now it's liquids that we're all worked up about. My friend is flying from London to NY with a 2 year old tomorrow. She's pretty calm about it (may be because it's the kid's 3rd time on a trans-atlantic flight).

Personally I'm more pissed about weight restrictions for luggage not being changed accordingly, since now we have to pack stuff that would be in carry-on otherwise.
