Luanne, I don't know about you, but I think it's really odd that Bush chose today to do this. I actually find myself wondering what the hidden motives are. On the one hand, he says Rummy resigned today after the sweeping win by the dems :ra: ...on the other hand, he says he was in Crawford talking to Gates last w/end about taking over for Rummy. Why though today, of all days? It really makes it look like the Dems win was more powerful.
If I were Bush, I would have waited a couple of weeks to make the change so that the dems couldn't celebrate and say "see, we've already gotten rid of some dead weight just by winning". So again...why today? It makes me suspicious.

I heard something today about his resignation making it more difficult to launch investigations. Not sure how that work exactly, but if there was something to worry about (including just a big fat political stink fest) maybe they wanted to limit the targets for the new dem house/senate. I know that the Dems "contract" was a first 100 hours....not 100 days. I'm thinking that time was of the essence?Angie

Angie, I thought the EXACT same thing about the investigations. He can go out on a positive note and not be prosecuted...and if he is, he won't be a part of the administration anymore and they won't have to distance themselves from him, etc.
I wonder if this means that Bushy will resign :>

I don't see Bush resigning, I see Cheney resigning so they can have a viable "incumbent" from the White House.
Bush claimed that he didn't want to make the change before the elections b/c it would signal that they acknowledged trouble. I think if he HAD made the change before I would probably have earned them some votes. At least IMO, part of the "move for change" is their crazy arrogance along the way.

I think the republicans would have WON if Bush had kicked Rummy to the curb 2 weeks ago. Rumsfeld has been one of those tidal wave issues and even my own dad, who is a republican extraordinaire, financially helped float the Swift Boat Veteransetc sent in letter of complaints re: rumsfeld as well as some particular military generals.
If they had been smart enough to give him the boot earlier, they might have won this one.

The very idea that they would keep some one on heading up the war effort that they planned on replacing *because of an election* makes my blood boil. I know it's political reality -- but I just hate that the "plain speaking, honest, no games" peoplecould play such a HUGE political game and still claim that they aren't controlled by politics. Please.
