I'm getting ready to start studying for the GRE. Do you recommend taking a review course? I am totally unfamiliar with the GRE. I took a review course for the LSAT and MCAT but am not sure if it's needed for the GRE.

Any suggestions about books I can get at the bookstore as well to study from?

    Thanks!

I took the GRE quite a few years ago, so I can't promise that it will help, but I used a Princeton Review book and thought it prepared me pretty well. As I remember it, it was pretty different from other standardized test I've taken. I do have friends that have taken the GRE and LSAT and thought they were somewhat similar, but don't have personal experience with it.

If you know what program you're applying to, I would contact them and ask what scores they look for or if they set a minimum cutoff. You can always take a practice test and see if you land in the ballpark of what you want, and invest in a review course if you think you need it then.

I found review books to be very helpful as well - just did many review questions - especially for the analytical section.
(granted this information is from 20 years ago when I took the GREs - way back in the 20th century)

        Rachel,
I too did the GRE a while ago, like 6 or so years ago. But I do remember that I had the Princeton Review book and I did loads and loads of questions on the computer. I think there was a CD with the book. Just getting used to the type of questions.

Many schools will fund (or not fund) you depending on your GRE scores. You might get accepted, but you might not get funded. Don't take the GREs lightly if you're looking at competitive programs. If you can afford to take a course, do it! The format on the computer makes for tired eyes, so be sure to get in a lot of practice on the computer!
