  • Trying to decide if I should drop one job

So in preparation to apply to grad school I have been volunteering in the hospital in two different areas (two different hospitals too). One of the jobs is very interesting and I'm getting great experience. That one's fine. The other one, however, is more mundane work--and I approached the Dr. in charge and expressed that I was interested in more challenging, relevant work to my career interests (since I'm working for free, after all) and I haven't heard back from that person.

I'm wondering if I should drop the second job. I feel bad b/c I made a committment for at least the summer (to volunteer 10 hours per week) but I don't feel that I'm getting anything out of it. Would you drop it? I'm kind of conflicted here.

I would drop it. I don't think one less volunteer job is going to make a difference on your grad school applications. Even more so for med school. I would focus on knocking out those MCATs so that your application can make it through the weeding process or they won't even look at your volunteer work.

I agree, Tara. It's just for the summer, right? That's not so bad.

I don't understand: you're working for free? Why would one do such a thing? This is a completely foreign concept to me.

Kidding. I think I've been a lawyer for too long...

I didn't want to work for free....I wanted a paid position but I couldn't find on in my new field (I applied everywhere and cold-contacted over a period of three months) and need the experience for my resume so I decided I needed to work for free.

Yeah, sometimes you just gotta do what you gotta do to get your foot in the door. I "worked" at the Dallas County District Attorney's Office for a long, hot summer during law school. My "salary" was free parking...

Drop it. If you don't like it, you don't have to do it Esp if you are just volunteering. Yes, I too would feel bad if I had made a commitment. However, if they aren't floating your boat with the work they give you, you time is better spent elsewhere.
